I think they store how many times a certain speed is hit.
The time stamp so they know when to set up speed traps is something I never thought of.

The one on I10 in BR just says “SLOW DOWN” if you exceed 75. Takes all the fun out of trying to get the high score!

Shows the first two digits of the number, at least that is what the old ones did, new ones display a message like slow down if you exceed the limit they set.

Here they are used to collect data aaaaaaannnnnnnnd to record who is entering and leaving that particular area.
