Do they design gas station overhangs specifically to make damage look bad in storms?

Just saw on the news that there was storm damage in Port Allen. Sure enough, part of it looked like it was from one of those gas station canopies.
What is it with those things that they are always damaged in every storm?

Well, they are basically flimsy, giant sails, so it doesn't take much wind to lift one off of it's anchors.

no, they design them to get the customers under them wet. Especially if you're on the end. storm damage is just an extra.

That, and I've found pumping gas in the cold feels 20 degrees colder under those things

I had an uncle that got his head cut off by one during a strong windstorm. His family sued and got $3.50. The price per gallon of gas at the time. But seriously, their lawyer was the Loch Ness Monster.

Think of it like a piece of paper being blown around in the wind: That open air flat canopy with a much larger surface area than the bottom of the posts bolted to it and the ground catches a gust of wind and it's game over.
Aerodynamically speaking, they're like the fletching on an arrow used in archery, and just like an arrow being released like a ball bearing in a slingshot, as soon as those anchor bolts that hold the whole thing together shear off and release that energy it's game over.
(And when it does, you'd better hope it doesn't shear off your face if you're in nearby car.)
Alternatively you can see why a monolithic dome design like in the pic below that took a direct hit by an EF4 or 5 survived intact because of the opposite reason. Its round design is very "not" aerodynamic. Think of it like a musket ball and how inaccurate those things were.

Don't expect to see suburbs popping up across the country with this fugly arse design (though some in central Mississippi and Alabama should probably consider it). roundhouses @ monolithic.org
