Since there is no real service involved, I typically throw a dollar and any change that I have.

Exactly. It would be the equivalent of tipping the cashier at Lowe's

if the person I'm dealing with is a hot girl with a good attitude, for some reason I feel inclined to give more.

This stupid topic gets posted twice a week on here.
It's pretty amazing that people don't have enough common sense to figure out different scenarios will mean different things with tips. Do you really need the OT to figure out this great mystery for you

I leave cash, though I may use a card for the main purchase.

A few around me auto-grat 10-20% for pickup. They will get zero of my business.
Both Vincent's and Cypress in Metairie will hit you for 15 and 20% for walking in the door and picking up your food

Who the frick cares if they "expect" it or not? You're literally lighting dollar bills on fire if you tip for to go orders.

You do realize that labor cost is included in the price of to go orders, right? If they are working the counter/register, they are getting paid by the hour, like the cooks that cooked your food.

do you tip the cashier anywhere else you go? Your answer is on point, the answer is a resounding NO

Agreed
Just curious what the status quo is. Thought there might be some food service folks here to chime in

I tip if they lean over enough so I can get a good glance of their cleavage. If not, no.

If I go to a restaurant that requires I pay a cashier for my meal, I will leave a tip on the receipt if I pay via credit/debit.
Depending on where I go, sometimes I have to pay before I get my meal and sometimes I have to pay afterwards. Some restaurants give me cash for whatever I put on the tip line. The ones that don't, suppose I'm just fricked if I leave a tip in advance and get bad service, but I'm not tipping for 0 service.
"Service" is defined as being brought my food, asking for drink re-fills, if I need anything, or just waiting on me in general. Placing a bag on a counter top or walking it 5 feet is not service.

A few years back some entitled Louisiana cashier posted a credit card receipt from Drew Brees, apparently they expected a big tip from him even though it was a "to go" order.
IMO you don't tip for carry out orders unless they do something exceptional. A tip reflects in-restaurant service. There is no waiter or busboy involved in serving your table when you order carry out. Theoretically, that's what the tip is supposed to subsidize.

The service warrants a tip, albeit not as much. They took your order and made sure the order was correct. Just because you did not order a drink and sit down at a table doesn't mean they did not perform their job duties. Another way to look at this, your tipping allows restaurants to not charge you what they really should charge you. Unless America wants to get away from the tipping culture, which I wish it would, people need to understand it's necessity.

If I order take out, 0% chance I tip unless it's one of those places like Santa Fe where you park and they take the food out to your car. Not donating a dollar to someone for handing me my food
