I could list you thousands of soul singers that sing just as well or better than Sam Smith ( not saying he appropriates), but there is a certain mainstream appeal to a blue-eyed soul singer that has always drawn in more crowds that black artists with the same talent set. Lets not deny this; I will say, the brits do a great job with their soul musicians and have usually been great with the respect/homage.

Oh, so should they be forbidden to sing, or do we have to have permission from Jesse Jackson or a black consensus to do this?

So can white cultures steal from each other but not others? Is that the case you're making here?

I didn't say that. I never said white folks can't make black music or use black influences? When did I say that ? I don't believe that at all. I literally just said I can't stand people that said that.

What I said, to repeat myself is, anyone can imitate anyone. How the other imitated culture responses is up to them. In black folks case, they will be checking your cards of authenticity. They do not want to be used a prop for profit because they have been before, and they are RIGHTFULLY sensitive to it. Just like a rape victim is sensitive to rape jokes, or a battered woman is sensitive to domestic violence issues. They just want to know / feel that this artist isn't a gimmick and that thy actually respect the music and the art form. Black art is a art form of pain and soul, and their needs to be some authenticity to it...or it becomes pop or some watered down music. There struggle is embodied in the music and its really juvenile to not respect that. its what decent human beings do.

if you can't get that, as plain as day, then you don't want to get it.

It's not something I really think about, that's how much I care about it, but if anything I think it is a positive thing.

Isn't it a sign of respect if someone likes something about a certain culture so much, they decide to incorporate it into whatever they do?

No, they just hope to profit from it. Except for the true morons - yeah, they get mad. And are egged on by the profiteers.

As Hispanics. I know some hispanics don't like the gentrification of their foods. Actually I know of a lot of ethnicities (HINT: ALL OF THEM) that don't appreciate some of their culture being watered down.

We have to realized that some of these things are tied to their spiritual and religious customs.

Thats the same line of logic the George Wallace's of the world used in the 50s to comment on the civil rights era .."well actually they are treated just as fairly and equally as us. I don't know what they are complaining about."

Or the guys that said the drunk girl was just asking to get raped.

Tragic

How am I baiting or trolling when I'm literally telling you how others perceive things?

Are their perceptions trolls and is there only one way to see the world? Through the lens of those that just want minorities to just shut up and be happy that they are here? How paternalistic

It's not hard to be respectful to those that have blazed a trail for you in a field.

It's called humility and respect. Why does that seem to get disregarded whenever it black folks complaining...

I'd be damned tho if it were some non-Americans / enemies of the states that statutes resurrected to display their deplorableness in all it's glory though...nah we better pipe down and respect those true non American heroes!

It would be kind of cool for people who want to be treated like everyone else act like everyone else, so they can be treated like they actually want. Faux outrage, created drama, no one has time for that shite.

Why do they? Do you realize how paternalistic your attitude and tone is? Why should they get in order with what you said? What makes that train of thought the governing train of thought? Is it dare I say superior ?

Thats not even remotely the same. We're talking about an american company and a native japanese production.

I don't see how those are any more culturally appropriated than say taking inspiration from James Brown and making a good song. There's no difference.

quote:

No one here was enslaved, beaten, sold, raped, murdered, terrorized or had their original cultures and religions ripped away from them. They are not comparable, and never will be.

Yeah, none of us have enslaved ancestors? After Europe and Asia have been conquering for thousands of years you don't think we don't? To be fair you're closer to it, but 2 living memories away from someone who was directly enslaved on this continent for anything except sex. So sorry, I don't really care, and y'all need to get over it as well. There's nothing I find more pathetic than the victimhood mentality from someone who hasn't been victimized.
