re: Do powerball rules prohibit you from selling a winning ticket?

This. The purchaser will have to disclose that they bought it so they can deduct the purchase price and be taxed on the net proceeds.
The seller could figure taxes into the sale price of the ticket as well and this could be avoided.

I know in Louisiana, a person does have to claim it publicly, but I don't know if the purchaser of the ticket has to be the claimant.
If I win it, nobody buy immediate family would know that I won.

Realistically this is basically impossible. They may not know you won, but they'll be damn suspicious when you start to spend money like you never have before...

Again, I'm not asking about the claiming anonymously rules. I'm asking can you sell the ticket and have the new owner of the ticket be eligible to claim the prize?
On the back of the ticket I bought yesterday, it said something to the effect of whoever signs the back claims the prize. If you signed it and gave it to someone, then they could not claim the prize.

What state was this? Sure your colleague isn't full of shite? In Louisiana if you set up a trust, then the trust is paid and the only name that is on public record is that of the trust and the trust rep/attorney.
Not Louisiana, but I can tell you for a FACT, a trust cannot claim the prize in Louisiana. The Trust can accept the funds, but an INDIVIDUAL MUST claim the prize.

The Williams Trust Claims Share of $50 Million Powerball Jackpot
quote:
Louisiana's 15th Powerball jackpot-winning ticket was presented today at Louisiana Lottery headquarters by Baton Rouge attorney Stephanie Laborde, who claimed the prize on behalf of The Williams Trust.
Before the May 25 drawing marking Louisiana's 15th Powerball jackpot win, July 2010 was the last time a jackpot-winning ticket had been sold in Louisiana; the $85.7 million prize was claimed by H & N Family Partnership of Baton Rouge.

Ummmm. You really don't understand why someone would not want people to know they won some trashy arse Lottery?

Honestly, what is the drawback of people knowing you won that would be soooo bad.
People asking you for money? If you are rich from anything, people are going to be hitting you up for money. So do people who own large businesses try to hide the fact that they own the business (for the most part)?
Same thing with the whole "kidnapping/fear for my life angle. I just don't see every single person who is rich not having the same fear. You can afford a security system and a gated community now.
I wouldn't go around blabbing about it. Especially wouldn't say anything until the money was in my account. But I sure as hell wouldn't have a problem moving my arse to a huge house and buying all the toys I could afford now. Not going to try to hide it.
I think the walk away was 300 MM. I'll take 5 of that and use it to deal with the annoying part of winning the lottery and I think I could still get by

Does anyone know if the lottery rules in LA or other various states would allow for this?
Per Louisianalottery.com
"If I win, can I remain anonymous?
If you win more than $600 and are therefore required to claim your prize at a Lottery office, you will be required to complete a claim form for tax purposes. Under the Lottery's statue, all prize payment records are open records, meaning that the public has a right to request the information. Depending upon the amount won and public or media interest in the win, winners may NOT be able to remain anonymous. The statute also allows the Lottery to use winners' names and city of residence for publicity purposes such as news releases. The Lottery's regular practice is not to use winner information in paid advertising or product promotion without the winner's willingness to participate."

A public records request will get you the winners names. Like I said, a trust, representative, LLC, can accept the funds, but the individuals name will be public record.
My use of "claim" may differ from theirs, but that doesn't change the fact that the state does not allow the individual to remain anonymous.

This sentence doesn't even make sense.

Y'all do realized that it would be taxed twice so you'd have to sell it at more than the tax rate discount.

Before claiming the prize call everyone you know and ask to borrow $500. Problem solved.
Posted on 1/7/16 at 2:18 pm to slackster
Plus they also release where the ticket was purchased, if you live in a rural area people would figure it out just from that.

I would go through a lawyer then donate half of it to a charities. If anyone tries to come after me I would just tell them I gave it all to St. Jude, VA ect...
