re: Do normal people get PHDs?

It’s pretty common in scientific related fields. BioPharma and such. As well as mental health.
Most PhD’s I run across don’t care to be called Dr. and those who do are a bit egotistical. Grad school is basically just showing up on time and writing papers, and a lot of group projects… a dissertation with an advisor for a PhD. And lots more $ of course. But I’ve known plenty of fairly dumb or at least very naive PhD’s. They can tend to be a bit sheltered and silo’d from the world around them.

A friend of mine's daughter got a PhD in anthropology and field archaeology...took her until she was 28 years old.
And then promptly got a job as an HR manager at a major auto parts distribution company.....

PhDs are for people who want to spend 9 years in school, rack up a shite ton of debt, get a crappy teaching job and then bitch about conservatives, traditional Judeo Christian values and how little money they all personally make.
I always find these sorts of posts interesting as you can tell 1)who went to college and 2)what they studied.
Across both undergrad and graduate school I can count the number of political comments from my professors on 1 hand. If you don't want liberal BS, don't study things that have liberal BS professors teaching it. If you study things like finance, engineering, chemistry, math, accounting ... You won't have to worry about this.

Might want to trim down that wide brush. A bit of truth to it, perhaps.
Daughter and son-in-law are both PhDs, and both quite "normal", conservative, Christian.
Academia is a minefield, no doubt, but there are the occasional bright lights.

Wow
Guy, I legit have never recalled addressing or even seeing you post prior to today. If I've hurt your feelings, I apologize.
You tried baiting the plebs with your racist gif, and it was so bad admin had to remove it. It's not surprising, and it's not ancient history. It's quite simple: You're just a spineless hack, one of many at this dump, and it's more a testament to your lack of intellect and groupthink than it is you being, "special". So don't flatter your little narcissistic self.
But let's not move the goalposts. Let's try and keep up, k bud?
Now address my quantifiable, factual assertion. Also, I'd like to add to that assertion: Qualify just how badly, deeply, and gravely I've

I have a Ph D in a specialized business discipline (A mixture of Quality, Statistics, Mathematical Modeling, and Analytics before the terms were en vogue). My wife has one in the hard sciences.
When we were in school (probably now 15 years ago) our PhD cohorts were both 50/50 US vs International. Now, my current group of doc students under me is probably closer to 25/75, at best, instead.
Part of the issue is I can't find domestic doc students who can do the math and put in the work who want to get a PhD. Most of my "quality" Masters students go grab the paycheck instead of wanting to chase research. I completely understand their thinking. I could go back to consulting for double+ what I make now. I do it because I love research and it is much more conducive to work balance with our kids still being at a young age.
On top of it, they have cut higher ed funding so much that it is almost impossible to get a PhD without either a spouse that can support you or just roll straight through from Bachelors to PhD and just be poor for a decade or more. The stipend for a doc student (to teach classes and what not) generally ranges from 20-30k annually. International students are much more willing to do that with either family footing their bill or just being super poor and dealing with it.
Why would I leave the 70-120k job you can get with an MBA to go back for a PhD as a domestic student in my field? Most Business PhDs I place in academia start around 110-130 conservatively. Why take 4 or 5 years to get the top end you would be at after your MBA? I did it for quality of life, but most don't have the opportunity and desire to sacrifice paycheck for a more functional day-to-day (with no travel!) and to teach research.
On top of all of it, since PhDs have a priority in the green card/visa process, many of my international students get PhDs to "jump the line" in the process. All of the mechanisms out there incentivize international students to get a PhD vs domestic ones. The only area that seems to be "pushed" for domestic PhDs seems to be in the DEI-heavy sectors. These areas the internationals tend to avoid due to the perception of the fields in their home countries. Even those super-soft social areas are seeing a major shift in international applicants because they want a simplified immigration pathway...
Getting a PhD in its current form for many disciplines is a mess. There isn't a ton of real incentives for my domestic students to keep going for a PhD....

After reading a couple of pages of your post history, I get it now. I'm actually not sorry I hurt your fragile feelings after all. Making you shake like a snowflake is quite funny now. Nice to meet you.

My brother has a PhD. He was a very important guy until he retired rich and happy. Now he does very important non (former) work and is even happier than when he was a VIP, making tons of money for a fortune 50 company.

What it is, is that you said, "uh oh," because you thought I was talking out of my arse, and then when I quantify my assertion, you have this nice little melt above, drop a shite post, and move on.
I hate to sound like your boy slowproflow, but I believe I'll take this W.
