I have had the most luck with the magnetic ones sold on amazon for under 10$. It is a super strong magnet and it finds the sheetrock screws.

Ever thing to build the house as far as lumber, I sawed it all on my sawmill. From tree to finish produce all off my place. If I had to go out in buy just the oak I used thru off the house, it would of cost way more then 15K easy. And yes all cabinets thru the house, doors are all oak.

I have a Bosch one that can deep scan and differentiate between metal and wood studs as well as sense live electrical wires. Very finicky and usually just easier for me to use a tape measure and knock on the walls. If I'm dealing with exterior walls then my thermal imaging camera does a great job picking up the location of studs.

Just buy a small strong magnet. Rub it across the wall until it finds a drywall screw. Old school carpenter showed me this years ago. It is the only way to go.

I've been following your progress and it is really coming out nice. I know if I had a piece of land with timber on it, I'd certainly have a sawmill at my disposal to garner some "sweat equity" in my projects.

You certainly have a true DIY project going on there. Can't wait to see the finished project pics. You've just got to stay healthy enough to "git er done".

Never had any trouble with the little cheap magnetic ones that find the drywall screws.

It's the same stuff on my ceilings, but the back is facing the room vertically. I have one of the few houses with zero sheetrock in it.

Eta: My walls are either full 3/4 pine with a chair rail, or custom pine inlays with a chair rail

yep, had some set backs this fall. But I did get a little floor work done. Some sweet Rosewood that one of my brothers gave me. Way more then what I need for the front bedroom.

Rest of the house will be some quarter sawed 100+ year old pine that my brother gave me.

Hey, if you live closet New Roads and would like to stop in for a cold one, let me know.

Stud finder are crap. Yesterday I thought I was putting a nail in the stud when actually it was a pvc pipe. Water started dripping through the hole in the wall. Fortunately i had some of the flex seal tape and put it over the hole to keep the water out. It actually worked.

I've found them to be inconsistent and lacking in accuracy.

So it will magically sense a stud behind plywood but not the plywood itself? not sure I buy that mang

So long as the combined layers are not too thick and fairly uniform, it will. Most electronic stud finders use capacitance to determine where the stud is. Air (or insulation) will have a markedly different capacitance than the stud. when you place the stud finder on the wall and press the button, it uses that reading as the base and signals when there is a change in capacitance.

That is why you should continue after the initial indication and make certain the signal drops after the approximate width of the stud in order to ascertain that you did not start on a stud. At least on mine I have to do that.
