What's life like on the islands?

I lived there for a month one summer while visiting my sister. It didn't take long to realize I was on an island with limited space to explore.

Stationed in Oahu during younger years.
Influx of new tourists come in every week. Austraila and New Zealand had some freaks. My buddy’s and I had fun nights roaming Waikiki.
Beautiful beaches, nice hiking, tropical weather and light rain almost daily. All parts of the island are absolutely beautiful in own way.
Cons: bad traffic, expensive, lots of asians with terrible driving skills and can’t properly walk on a sidewalk, and expensive to leave the island.
Its good a place for a young buck or older person looking to relax if they can afford it. Also those people eat rice with everything

I was there nearly 3 years and still was finding hidden gems every weekend. You just got to explore

Got hammered with some Aussie navy guys. They were there for RIMPAC, and would spend their evenings getting obliterated at various bars and restaurants. Dudes were absolutely insane at times.

My mother’s friend has lived there about 20 years. We visited back then, when I was a kid. Big island, it is quite amazing. It is what people think of Hawaii as. Just absolutely stunning, camp on the beach, surf shops, small town vibe, ocean is amazing.
Honolulu is apparently more expensive and more like a big city. Doesn’t sound like I would like it. But then, that is often the only place in Hawaii people can find jobs.
My father’s buddy used to also live there. I think Honolulu. He was Asian, and got jumped by Hawaiians at one point. It is a problem there apparently. They hate all non Hawaiians. Somehow they knew my dads buddy wasn’t one

Spent four years on Oahu. I liked it for the most part. Great weather, tons of hiking, camping on deserted beaches almost every weekend.
The crowds in Honolulu and parts of the north shore can be crazy, but it doesn't take long to learn where some amazing vacant beaches are.
Island fever was never an issue for me. I figured the majority of people spent 95% of their lives within a short drive from home, anyways, and in HI there are a LOT of things to do within a short drive.
Some people don't like it, but I used to love getting up early Saturday mornings for football and being done with all the big games in time to go out and do something else in the evenings.

Bellows Beach is nice and almost always vacant, from what I saw in my ~month of time on Oahu.

Have several friends that did...
if you are white, locals will hate you once you are out of the touristy area. Racism is a real thing.

Yup. My brother and his family live there and I’ve visited. Perfect weather for the outdoors, the people are friendly. Food seems to be mostly Asian of all types. The Arizona memorial gives you the chills man. Pearl Harbor so much history

I also think a lot of those stories make their way back to the mainland via service members who maybe weren't as well-behaved as they let on when retelling, and attracted negative attention. And I say that as a former service member.

It has nothing to do with being white I don’t think. They hate all non Hawaiians. Everybody is a target.
My dad’s friend got jumped by them and the dude is literally a dark skinned Asian. He looks exactly like how you would expect a Hawaiian to look. But they knew better.

So dumb. Just tell the antagonist, ‘you’re not a real man until you’ve had another’
