Saying someone is a dry drunk because they’re sober without working the steps is insisting AA is the only way to true sobriety.

AA has too many self-appointed gurus who insist their way is the only way. I’ve known two people who “worked the program” for years, then “backslid” and went nuts binging. Programs more forgiving of relapse/moderation
You have no clue what you are talking about.

Had a son who went to rehab at Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center. Worked the program 5 years. Stayed sober for that time. He quit working the program and moved to Austin (working on his PhD). Relapsed and would not get back into the program. I buried him a few months later. He was only 27.
I also worked with a surgeon that followed the program 40+ years and never relapsed.
I know there are alternative programs. Find one. Trust me, your parents and loved ones deserve better than to bury you.

I like that you're willing to take this character into new settings.
God bless you real person behind this mess.
Also quitting is weakness.

AA meetings worked for me. Just hit 3 years. Tried to stop on my own and couldn't figure it out. Went to AA and haven't picked up a drink since.

No... you realize you have a problem, stop it.

Better than just about anything else.
That isn't to say that it works well, but it works as long as its applied over a lifetime, not just until you 'feel better'.

Thanks for sharing! The friend I went with was really important to me, so I basically held his hand through it. I read the big book and found a lot to like. Unfortunately, there were a few busybody types at the meetings that deviated from the book in the ways I mentioned in my earlier posts, and it struck me as too sort of authoritarian for people coming in (maybe experiencing a bit of diffidence). I’m not anti-AA but there are problems with it that may turn off someone reaching out for help. Just MHO. I am really happy for anyone it does work for- living life in a constant cycle of drinking/guilt/shame is hell on Earth.

No one thing works for everyone. AA does work for some, it's always worth a shot. Might have to try several different tactics until you settle on one that works

Yeah it works if you work it :)
I’d recommend some type of inpatient rehab first.

I’m sorry for your loss brother. This disease has taken a lot of my
Loved ones as well. I can’t imagine burying a child though.

I do understand what someone said about the “guru’s” though.
There are people (few and far between) in AA that think this is the only way. I’ve met them. AA works for me and the sober house I own, they are required to attend AA and work steps to live there. However I do have friends that have stayed sober without AA (few and far between)

Yeah, unfortunately people are still people and there are no saints in AA. Far from it.
There's kind of a saying that when someone is really ready, nothing you say will ever turn them off to it. And if they're not ready, then nothing you'll say will convince them. Only when they've had enough pain and misery will they be ready.
AA really is about freedom. There is no authority. There is no hierarchy. The only power or authority figure that's required is whatever sort of higher power you choose to believe in. And that can be whatever you want. That freedom is the only way it worked for me.

Go to a few meetings and have an open mind. Some meetings are different with specialized groups available which may be more of what you want. "It works if you work it", as they say at the close of a meeting.

Sure, you'll find this in every facet of life.
There's no "one way" and every path has some value. It takes some trial and error to make something work for you.
I couldn't do many steps in AA, didn't want a sponsor but did get a lot of value out of peoples stories and how they got where they are today.

Yes just go. Almost a month for me. Its all about you wanting to change. You will be shocked at the amount of people that want to change. You have to work the program. Find a meeting you like and GO!
