You've done step 1 to perfection.
Know a lot of people they have worked for and a lot they haven't. You get out of them what you put into them. There are a lot of other things besides meetings needed. Good Luck. Those I know that have recovered have done a 180

I had a friend sentenced to AA and I went to many meetings with him.
If it’s financially feasible, I would always recommend a non 12 step rehab first. AA has too many self-appointed gurus who insist their way is the only way. I’ve known two people who “worked the program” for years, then “backslid” and went nuts binging. Programs more forgiving of relapse/moderation tends to be more realistic and less cultish.

It can help a mild addiction, but if you are bad off, some kind of rehab program will be needed as well.

The two people you knew backslid because they are addicts, not because AA wasn’t good enough. They would have relapsed in any type of program most likely. AA is very forgiving of those that relapse because they understand that it’s pretty much a guarantee that it will happen to most.

They do for me. Just got back from my noon AA meeting. I went to a 30 inpatient treatment center first. It’s very hard and dangerous to stop drinking cold turkey. You’re not gonna lose anything by checking out a meeting. There’s always people there early and stay late if you just want somebody to talk to about it. I hope it works out.

FACTS.....AA will work if YOU want it to. If you are not fully committed it won’t work.... 12 steps is a great program for life in general. Not just addicts........

Had a neighbor who made the choice to start working the steps.... if I recall he just earned his 4 year chip.

I have two family members who are very active in AA. One has two years, the other has one year.
Both swear by it and attend 4-5 meetings a week.

Good for him. I have a friend who is over 25 years sober and still carries the little black book. Dudes a millionaire.

For some people, absolutely.

Really? You’ve never heard anyone being accused of being a dry drunk after sobriety without “working the steps?” I have a hard time believing this. They also mostly tend to take a hardline on marijuana.
As for the relapse, maybe the person could handle the slide/correction but they’ve had the idea that they have a disease and can’t control their drinking (scientifically dubious) drilled into their head nearly daily for years.

When I first got sick I went 16 months without a drop and zero AA meetings. I guess it was because I was sick but it can be done. Once I went back to work I just got back in the flow of getting a few after work.... BUT if I decided to stop and committed myself I would go to netting’s regularly.
