The movie is based very loosely off the book and if I recall the book doesn’t mention a race.

This is a joke right?

Ariel is in no way supposed to be white. Black panther was specifically created to have a black super hero just like wonder woman is supposed to be a woman.

To you maybe, but the reception from back folks to this news has been overwhelming. They’re pretty excited. There’s been a tweet circling that mentioned an entire generation passed without ever seeing a black princess. 70 years to be exact.

She won't really be the princess though, she will just be a live action actor. Now that Beauty and the Beast live action has been out awhile, no one really gives a damn about the Emma Watson version, she really isn't Belle. It goes right back to the cartoon. Little girls obsessed with Disney want to have their picture taken with the cartoon princess, not the Emma Watson version.

What is Disney going to do about that? The disassociation will be bigger. Will they replace the animatronics they have on that newish ride? Most likely not, pandering to a small part of your park goers will most likely last for a few years before it's just totally gone from the parks.

We are already starting to see this with Aladdin and it hasn't been out that long.

You're changing race simply for the sake of changing race.

If we make Huck Finn black, is it ok to put the n-word back in the book?

But nowhere does it say that Ariel has to be white

True. But the creator of the story, the Little Mermaid, was Hans Christian Anderson. He was Danish and lived in the 1800's. I can guarantee you that his story did not take into account a black mermaid.

However, the story also was not meant to be a cheery disney-fied fairy tale. So yes, if Disney is remaking tales they can change the skin tone of their fictional characters.

The problem people have with it, is the obsessive focus on race that entertainment has these days. The pandering is eye-rollingly obvious. So while it doesn't affect my day, it's just silly nonsense in the end.

I have a bigger problem with the anti-male direction Disney (and Nickelodean) has nowadays. Would it kill Disney to have 1 new male protagonist main character that isn't an animal?

It couldn't be because through the audition process, they hired the girl they thought would do the best job?

Are y'all saying that for a black girl to get this part, it has to be an agenda? The black chick couldn't have earned it?

And yet the movie still exists, and is a Disney movie.

This is no different than the all-female Ghostbusters remake.

Doubtful. That movie was 10 years ago and it probably wasn’t the best story to introduce a black princess. My daughter doesn’t care for this movie simply because it involves frogs. Girly girls don’t wanna see princesses kissing frogs.

There was also huge marketing problems specifically with the title. The word “princess” turns boys away instantly.

Boys aren't going to flock the the Black Little Mermaid movie either.

Watch what I'm telling you. Beauty and the Beast had really good casting and that movie came and went with barely a peep. This one will be even worse.

Yes. Ariel isn't specifically white or black anymore than Ghostbusters are specifically male or female.

And Disney is purposefully changing the race of an existing character just as Ghostbusters purposefully changed the sex of existing characters.

It has nothing to do with "best person for the job" and you damn well know it.

It's pandering bullshite in both cases.

I would LOVE for that to be the case. However, knowing Disney, do you really think this is what happened, especially given todays SJW environment and Disneys agenda? Only way to really prove it is see the movie. If she is heads above most in singing ability, then we'll know it's because of that. You can teach anyone to act, so i dont think acting prowess for a Disney live action film was a consideration.

Beauty & the Beast was actually terrible. I hated all of it.

I don’t think the live action remakes are supposed to be these huge blockbusters. It’s Disney looking to make a profit off the Gen X/Millenial crowds that grew up on the animated films. My 4 year old would take the animated all day every day, doesn’t matter which film.
