Do they allow you roof access there to watch the MK's firework show?

Technically no. That area is for DVC owners only. BUT, we asked and they let us up there. We just said we were renting points from a friend and played dumb and the guy was cool with it.

There is an area just off the walkway from bay Lake to Contemporary thatis open to the public. It's right under where the monorail enters the Contemporary.

Another option is the observation deck at the California Grill. Depends on how many people you have, but we have always had success just telling the hostesses at the check in desk (4th floor of contemporary) that we just wanted to go to the bar. Then they have escorted us up the elevator and we made sure to arrive in enough time for a glass of wine or two, then walked outside.

That is without question my favorite viewing location outside of Magic Kingdom

The first trip for the Midnight crew - we stayed at the Contemporary - it was a Magic Kingdom heavy visit with the little ones, and I cannot recommend it more highly for that purpose. Contemporary is probably not as snazzy as Floridian or tropi-cool as Polynesian, but it is stunningly efficient for a MK trip. We left the hotel less than 10 minutes before the park opened and had to wait when we got there (walk to and monorail back is your best option because the monorail goes clockwise). The final parade ended at something like 20 - 25 minutes before the final fireworks display - we caught the monorail and had enough time to get to the room, change and go to the other side of the tower to watch the fireworks. 14+ hours in the park - less than 20 minutes travel/wait times for anything.

Polynesian is probably the best couples' place - although we've never stayed there. Just too reasonable at Shades of Green.

Floridian seems nice, but I'm not 100% convinced it's worth the premium over Polynesian or Contemporary.

Their regular rooms aren't for sure...very small in comparison.

The new DVC expansion is nice, but they all are (even Old Key West). Personally, I think Boardwalk is probably the best value then Beach Club/Bay Lake depending on what park(s) you want to be closer to.

The RCID, depending on how you look at it, is either the perfect example of the sheer genius of Walt and his cronies, or, the biggest, most terrible example of government abuse in the history of our fine nation. Or perhaps both.

Bay Lake is amazing. Went for my College Graduation and stayed there because my parents are DVC members. Be sure to watch the fireworks from the roof.

Boardwalk is by far the best overall value in terms of price/point + experience. You get a little bit of everything there and aren't limited like some other resorts.

OKW/SSR are quiet places with no direct access to any park.

AKV is for those who love animals and Animal Kingdom. Beautiful place to stay, but it's very much a niche resort.

BLT/GFV are the most expensive. You're paying for the access to MK which is worth it to some but not the majority.

WLV is forgotten by many because it's one of the older builds and gets outshined by the MK resorts on the monorail line.

BWV/BCV are very similar because of their location and theme. However, BWV has a huge advantage because of the bigger variety in rooms, total number of rooms, price/point and maint fees, option for longer purchase period. BCV is really just for people who HAVE to swim in SAB and happen to like the theme, too.

We just closed on resales at both BLT and BCV. The wife and I would have preferred Boardwalk, but we feel as the kids get older, they are going to enjoy BCV more than BWV.

Marathon weekend (January) is a great time to go. The biggest issue you are going to have are the Brazilian Tour Groups, BUT they usually arrive later in the morning and most of them stay off site.

Crowds start to die down about 1/3 and will pick up for MLK weekend, but any time between there is a great time to go.

With changes to the fastpass system, you will want to book as soon as you can.

People might think you're joking or exaggerating, but it's true. They're everywhere, in large groups, in every park, and tend to be (although not always) extremely rude. I avoid them during fireworks and try to not get in a line they just entered... for one reason: while it may seem like it's a whole group at first, another 20 will join in by either skipping or squeezing in where there's hardly any room.

The Friday-Monday over marathon weekend is relatively full as well, but I enjoy it. Lots of happy people who finally get to let loose and enjoy the parks after months of work. It's a big crowd, but it's an "easy" crowd.

Accounting?

I visited this past September, and will be returning for NYE. Any advice? I've never been around the holidays. Expecting the worst...

Don't expect the worst. With planning and appropriate expectations, even the busiest time of year can be fun.

My first advice is to look at the crowd calendars for the days you are there:

December and January.

Avoid the busy parks when you can and try to spend MOST of your time in the recommended parks. If attractions and parks are your thing, arrive early every day...like real early. Avoid morning extra magic hours like the plague and if a park is advertised to open at 9am, they really open up at 8:45 so be there no later 8:25. Like, standing at the entrance at 8:25.

You'll get more done between 8:45 and 11 am then you will any other time of the day except for the last hour the park is open.

Plan on hitting attractions first thing, then things like shows, resort hopping, shopping, pool breaks, etc. during the middle of the day (when lines are the longest) then head back that night and plan to stay as late as you can.
