think waiters and waitresses need to understand that when a restaurant charges a man 5% to use a credit card....that 5% percent is coming out of your tip.
I know it's not your fault but life's not fair and the piper has to be paid somewhere. Unfortunately that falls on you in this instance.
Also understand that they are, at least, tipping out a bartender. When they are stiffed they lost money serving a person. If you don't like the credit card charge then bring cash. This is a terrible reason to give someone less than what they earned over something that is not their fault

People in this thread who think that a high level of service will remain at sit down restaurants if the servers are making near minimum wage with no tips either haven't waited tables or are incredibly retarded.

Peen in China must be kinda small

These threads are always stupid.
The people that think like this don't want to be served at all. They might not realize it, but what they actually want is a world with no such thing as table service. They want a world where you order at the counted and pick up at the window, then dump the contents of your tray in the trash on the way out.

I've never seen tips increase pay 90%. That's BS. At best it's 15% in the new way of putting it on the screen. Also it makes them conscience of the fact that they must serve better to get better tips. It's a good thing for everyone involved. If you don't want to tip, don't. What we find is the worst tippers are usually the worst guest and hardest to please. Don't make me talk demographics or M/F stuff. I'm not insinuating that about you, just stating facts we've noticed for 20 years. As any server and they will tell you crazy stories about guests.

Tip sharing for front and back of house has changed how things are done. The back of house tells the front of house you better get your act together and treat people right bc we are counting on you to get us tips. Sadly some don't care and will never change their attitude. We try to never employ people like that.

Maybe the owner should pay them what they’re worth.
Would that start with abolishing the minimum wage?

Yeah, you're not getting it.
Servers make $2 to $3 an hour. Restaurant gets to charge about 5% over cost on their proteins, a little more on other foods, and a lot on alcoholic beverages. That's how they afford to pay servers so low and keep menu prices cheap.
If a server in a busy restaurant has a good week they can make several hundred bucks. More take home pay than a salaried position that would pay that range because of cash tips, but the restaurant only pays them about $70-$80 total.
That's why you tip.

Maybe the owner should pay them what they’re worth. Yes, it might lead to higher prices on food, but if we’re already being ethically and morally challenged to “add a tip,” might as well just make it part of the actual price.
Restaurant owners know they will lose a certain customer base if they raise prices. This is effectively raising prices for tippers without having to raise prices for those that don’t tip.

I stopped going to several places because of this, I'm not tipping less, I'm not tipping at all because I'm not in your fleece joint.

I shite you not, the pretzel and drink stand at an astros game asked for a tip when I swiped my card, I’m not against tipping but that is pushing the limit right there
Went to a concert at the Biloxi Coliseum and they have beer stands in the concourse area. Its aluminum cans in a cooler. Self serve and just walk over to the register to pay. The point of sale screen still asks for a tip on a $9 beer that you opened the cooler and grabbed yourself. All the cashier did was check an ID and open the can's lid

Truth!
Worst patrons and tipper were those for Sunday lunch after church. Ran you ragged and then no tip.

I was at place recently and their card machine tip option started at 20% and went up to 30%. I told 5he counter person that was ridiculous and then selected other and $0.
Did not feel bad about it in the least since this establishment chose to program their tip that that high.

Shoving the display or credit card machine asking for a tip in your face every time you pick up a to-go order can have a negative impact on people.
As gets stated everytime one of these threads come up, just click the no tip or custom tip button and leave $1. It's not that difficult folks.

The machines are made this way now to handle tips this way. It's not like an owner of a few places just decided this was the way he wanted to do it.
With all that being noted, I will say I ran into my first instance of a "required" tip at a counter service type of place this week.
I ordered my sandwhich and ran the credit card. To complete the transaction the machine was faced toward me and I had to choose the tip option. The only choices were 18, 20, or 22%. No other choices were available.
So for my $14 sandwich, I was required to pay a $2.50 or so tip.

Yeah, those are stupid.
Tip if they mix a drink for you. Don't tip for overpriced beer unless you're buying 3 or 4, then you can give a dollar.

You should be thankful they're not trying to get 10% off the bill for tithes.

You shouldn't feel bad about not tipping, you should feel bad about being a bitch to somebody who did not get to decide how the bill is paid or how much the tip option should be.
