watched an episode of the goldbergs last night. the dad tried and failed to have the talk with his son. it made me wonder how many parents do? I know my dad didn't.

My father did when I was 21 and two months shy of getting married. I just shook my head like I was learning something.

Father pulled me aside after an extra intense jai alai match and said, “sonny jim, when birds chirp, the honey flows from the flower.” He then treated me to lunch at the club and let me do donuts in his aston in the parking lot of the new hospital he was having built.

The problem is parents make it a one time, big deal event.

Just chat about it casually over the months/years during opportune times and you'll eventually cover everything without it being so awkward.

It’s an instinct, what is a little talk going to do when they have the internet to learn from?

Dad told me about it when I was 12 over raw oysters in a restaurant in New Orleans. I always think about that talk when I eat raw oysters to this day.

I remember Dad looking over while we watching football and a commercial for a TV show like your OP came on. Dad asked: "Son, do we need to talk about anything?" Through my laughter I was able to respond, "nope".

I was a good looking kid, girls had been throwing themselves at me for years, from like 5th grade on. So this happening around 9th/10th grade he kinda knew I had experience with chicks already. That was late 70's too so no stupid wrap it up to to protect from disease. The Sexual Revolution was over, guys everywhere were celebrating the ladies new found freedom. Everyone won!

We had Sex Ed at my Catholic school. Parents had to sign a form allowing me to endure it. That was as close as we came to having a talk. But then again, my dad didn't really talk to me about anything at all growing up.

Not a talk but when I was in high school my mom walked in on me and my girlfriend with her on top of me in all her glory. Walked in and quickly walked out girlfriend didn’t even know she had walked in so of course just kept on going. Took her home later and when I got home there was a packet on my bed with about 20 pages of info about sex pregnancy and STDs with a economy sized box of lifestyle condoms and a clipping of a diagram of a pregnant woman with a big red X drawn on it taped to my TV. Me and dad were fishing a couple days later and I asked him what the hell was that about being I was 18 and a senior in high school about 2 months from graduation surely she knew that I already knew about that stuff and he just laughed and said just don’t be getting any of them pregnant.

When Sody Cracker Jr. was 16 he told me he was going out to look for a hair poultice and that's when I knew the talk was not necessary.

My dad asked if I had any questions and I said no ( out of sheer fear of awkwardness ) .

That was it.

I was 12 or 13
