re: Did your old man regularly go out at night when you were a kid?

Dad: hardly ever that I can recall. With his work schedule, he liked spending time with us and then getting shut eye
Me: occasionally but again, I’d rather spend time with my kiddo. I go on random trips with my buddies 2-3 times a year (camping, hunting) but other than that, I like being home.

My old man would occasionally come home during the week.

That’s very interesting although I hope saying that isn’t inappropriate if it was bad memories.

When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, my dad would play cards most Friday nights with a group of older men. Never felt he was an absent father, because he coached little league baseball for 25 years and was a boy scout leader. He was and still is very present to me.
Because of that, I never questioned or noticed his Friday routine....until one Friday night he came home early.....why?.....because all of the other card players went home to watch Dallas on that particular night to see who shot J.R.
ETA: the 50+ crowd gets this. No shame. No shame at all. Google is your friend.

Mine only went out when our redneck families came to town. They'd hit up a dive honkytonk and get drunk as shite.

define “go out”. I go to a friend’s house at least once a month to drink and hang out without my wife. Going to a bar with friends is something that only happens a handful of times per year.
Thinking bar, corner watering hole type thing. Maybe even carousing type thing.

My father was always out late all the time but he was a raging alcoholic piece of shite. My wife and I never go out alone. We actually thoroughly enjoy each others company, which is pretty handy. Lol

No…never 1 time alone.
He and mom would go out for a late nighter 2-3 times per year.

Oh that’s old school shite there. Dallas is one of the best old school watches (or rewatches) there is.
That bitch Kristen Barnes.

No, never. My dad was a blue collar tradesman who worked sun up to sun down and by the time he got home was dead on his feet tired. He almost always went to bed immediately after dinner.

Naw it’s not bad memories at all. Well there’s one.
My dad was always called Super Dave every time when we walked into the bar. Well with me in tow and having the same name I got called Super Dave Jr. So in the first grade when you write your name on the paper to turn into the teacher I wrote Supper Dave Jr.
I wanted to crawl into a hole when the teacher asked who was supper Dave

Dad: Never went out to bars, even once. He always had a part time job when i was younger, until he developed his own biz when I was a teenager. Then I worked with him. He'd drink a 6 of Old Milwaukee most nights, mostly at the shop w other mechanics. Sat night was for racing and drinking PBR. Mom stayed at home.
Me: Friday night is date night for my wife and I. We go to a local bar or two for live music, this Friday to a show (Los Lobos and Steve Earle). We always get home by midnight. My wife's a nurse and works weekends sometimes, I'll meet my buddies out for a brew or watch LSU sports. Most Sat nights are at home, maybe invite friends over.

My dad went to the NCO club on Friday… when I turned 18 he got me a membership … I would meet him there with friends sometimes before we would head out for a late night and he would head home…

Not trying to be rude, but how is this healthy?

No, he worked.
I much rather get up at 2am and go fishing than stay out til 2am trying to party.

Father: yes about 6 nights a week. Was an alcoholic
Me: not anymore as I am an alcoholic as well, probably partially bc of spending lots of time in bars with dad growing up and sometimes picking him up at bars real late on school nights, bailing out of jail, etc. thankfully I got sober before we had our first child

Dad: Yes. Usually after bowling or after fishing or hunting.
Me: Rarely. Not really my scene.
Posted on 8/26/21 at 5:10 am to Havoc
No, not that I remember. We lived in the sticks.
Me: I go to happy hour once a week with my local friends group to really talk about work. I rarely drink at home or In front of the kids.
