Yes!
The only places that should have shut down were those that we over hospital capacity. Shutting down the entire country at once will go down as one of the biggest frick ups ever.

for a shut down to be truly effective, you need to shut down before you have a spike in cases
so no, no one shut down too early, most shut down far too late

are we still 14 days behind Italy?

If people could just act normal when opening, wear a mask, avoid close contact, not have big protests, etc. it would be nice.
Hard to get a good idea of what a better strategy might have been when for the most part we can't even follow the current system in large numbers.
And early action, with a hard/full and fast but relatively shutdown, local tracking, adequate testing systems, etc. would have been better IMO

Hospitalizations are the big worry in Dallas, houston and Austin. Beds are filling up quickly the last few days. And suddenly, I know 7 or 8 people with covid with 1 having to be hospitalized. My nephew is waiting on his results as he had a high fever for a few days. He is all better now but he was around my elderly parents the day before he started having symptoms.

I do not think viral elimination is a possibility in today's society.

How? You just said you can't eliminate it, so it is eventually going to spread. I would think the logical response would have been to only shut down once you feel like enough people have contracted the virus to create some type of herd immunity.

because the entire point of shut downs to eliminate the virus
our half arse shut downs were just that...half assed and as you can see, didn't really accomplish anything
if you are going to do shut downs, you do this hard and quick
if not, just don't do them

this certainly does not make any logical sense whatsoever

Or even better just isolate the high risk population and let the virus run its normal course?
Why should a young healthy adult be concerned about this?

I thought the purpose of the shutdown was to not overload hospitals. Well, we succeeded in that and yet they want everything either closed or partially closed. It’s unbelievable. Like poster said above, high risk folks need to stay home or away from large groups of people.

dont think that is accurate....I dont think anyone believe shutting down was going to eliminate the virus....at least I've never heard that
I was under the impression it was to slow down the spread and not overwhelm the hospitals.
How can you eliminate a virus with no vaccine and you literally know nothing about the virus?

You just said this wasn't possible.

Once that number is reached you shut down to slow spread and ease pressure off hospitals so they can catch up. Once you feel like this is accomplished and you open back up it will now be spreading slower because of herd immunity. Kinda exactly like New York's situations they had a large spread were able to shut down and keep the hospitals from getting extremely over crowded like Italy. Now they are opening back up and it is a manageable spread for them. Texas on the other hand never got a true wave and is now getting a wave after shutting down which was in a sense a waste of a shut down.
