The Union Fleet was anchored in the river and would have bombarded the city. Once they passed the forts downriver there was no defense. There weren't even any organized Confederate troops in New Orleans proper. The mayor surrendered the city.
If you’re an uber nerd and read Sherman’s letters, he thought sure after war broke out that the real fighting would be to win the Mississippi.
That the south’s only chance at independence would be to keep control of the lower part of the river. It was so obvious to him he figured it would be obvious to the south.
Turns out he was right, but the south’s main leadership never figured it out.

The Battle for New Orleans took place south of the city at Ft Jackson and St Philip. Once Farragut got past those forts New Orleans became indefensible. The battle was in April of 1862, so it was spring and the water level was high.
Once Farragut got to New Orleans all he would have to do is train his cannons on the levels and game over.

E. A. Pollard slammed the leadership over neglecting New Orleans in his book

Isn’t the song he’s referencing about the War of 1812
Yes. The verse "Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise if we didn't fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes" confirms it's about the War of 1812.
But a sizable percentage of posters here are idiots and likely know nothing about American history besides the garbage put forth by the MSM.

True but you didn't to go that far when the opening line is "In 1814 we took a little trip along with Col Jackson down the mighty Missispp"

I would have given up NOLA without a shot after consulting with my psychic who would have predicted the Landrieu regime.

It was obvious to Jefferson Davis but the man was too obsessed with holding onto EVERYTHING and not just the strategic points on the map. Also, when Southern leadership finally recognized the danger they were in Lee convinced them to let him invade Pennsylvania rather than sending soldiers to fight off Grant's campaign against Vicksburg.

Nola was the third largest city in the country with one of the most important ports in the world at the time. Neither side wanted to see it destroyed.

Yeah, if you’re devoting the defense of your city at the edge of your city , whether you win or lose you won’t have much of a city left.

first line starts with "In 1814...". That pretty much sums it up.

Dumbass commanders did not expect an attack from the Gulf/up the river, but from the north.
Which is stupid. In order to threaten the south's largest and 2nd important city from the south the USA only needed to pass the 2 forts and steam 70 miles up river. However, to attack it from the the north the USA would have to fight past Columbus Ky, Island No 10, Fort Pillow, and Vicksburg. Jefferson Davis, Judah Benjamin, George W. Randolph, and Stephen Mallory should have been impeached and hung by the Confederate States government for that choice.
quote:
Once Farragut broke past Fort Phillip and Jackson, the Confederates abandoned defense of the city.
That is because the river was up and the guns on the US ships were floating higher than the few batteries on the Chalmette defenses. It would have been suicide to try and defend the city.
