I have run into several people recently that I went to high school or grade school with who were not bright at all and are now teachers. It's seems like all the people who could barely make it through high school and middle school have gone back to teach. Is this typical or just an anomaly? I know this isn't the case with all teachers, I am sure there is a ton of super smart people teaching too.

How smart do you have to be to teach anything but upper level HS classes? High school freshmen English or history doesn't require being very smart to teach. If they are very passionate about it that's more important.

The most brilliant person I know teaches high school Spanish and English.

One of the dumbest people I know teaches PE.

Can't really generalize.

Generally people who are high academic achievers go into more lucrative professions. Plus, just because you were a C student in high school doesn't necessarily mean you aren't qualified to teach 1st grade. It may mean you are too dumb to teach HS courses or junior high though.

Education is one of the few majors where you can graduate with a 2.0, no extra curricular stuff on your resume, and have job offers equal to the person who majors in the same thing and graduates with a 4.0 with lots of resume boosting activities. The salaries are set on a table of experience level (years in service) and teachers are so in need, it doesn't matter how well you did or how smart you are.

I know a couple of the girls from my graduating classes that became elementary school teachers. They acted dumb as shite in high school, but I would guess you would have to be reasonably smart to pass college curriculum to get the certificate.

My wife, no pics, graduated college with honors after graduating HS with honors.

She teaches HS.

There are definetly some people who teach because they think it is easy / can't get another job. These people suck as teachers and generally*** don't last long.

*** Unless they are in a district with a strong union.

The academic rigor of elem school teaching may not be much, but you need to deal with 25 elem kids in a class all day. That's a skill many of us don't have.
