I always thought the same and came to the conclusion that the answer is YES....

"face value"
I am not taking it at face value but I am consedering all of the facts.
His father, whom he was very close to, was brutally murdered. MJ and his father had always talked about MJ trying to play pro baseball after basketball. MJ is a fierce competitor and had already accomplished everything he could in basketball. Factoring in the trauma of losing his dad and wishing to honor his dad's wishes to see him play baseball, and with nothing left to prove in basketball, he gave a new challenge a try. It's not hard to fathom at all when you think logically about it.
Also, if he was actually suspended then he wouldn't have came back midseason like he did. He would have had to wait the full 2 years of double super secret no take backs suspension.
BJ Armstrong has actually been interviewed several times about their 1 on 1 match that pretty much led MJ to coming back. You can google it. It was on NBA TV the other night actually.

I could believe this theory much better than the 9/11, Sandy Hook, Fake moon landings, etc.
Why? Because this could have been kept quiet just among Jordan, Stern, and a handful of others.
I've always thought it as strange to leave a game you're dominating to go be a middling minor leaguer in Birmingham.
But really, so what if he was caught gambling on the game? Its not like he ever played shitty on purpose.

Yea if anything he bet that they would cover and on the over.
On a serious note, however, the two thugs that killed his father would have definitely rolled over on whoever might have "contracted" them to kill James Jordan. Believe that.
In all, it's probably as simple as Michael Jordan reaching the pinnacle of his own profession, listening to his ego tell him he could be great at baseball, all the while having a mid-life crisis/melt down following his father's death.
I am grateful he came back, the second 3 - peat was incredible.

You idiots have no clue. He did this after his dad died bc that was "their" dream when Jordan was little. The OT is truly sad.

Well...Michael got his own father murdered over his debts so there is that.

It was such an impressive performance by 1 player as a leader that after that, I could say with some credibility - "If you built a hypothetical team around Michael Jordan, consisting of a dozen players from NBA history, selected completely at random from a starting year, they would likely defeat any 'dream team' assembled to defeat them 4 out of 7, and perhaps 3 out of 5, for the mere fact that the Jordan team would have him and the other team wouldn't."
And you could pick almost any version of Jordan - the young, rash, "wrecking crew" Jordan. Three-peat #1 or even the post-retirement Three-peat #2. Arguably the best skill set in a 2 ever, with the physicality of a 3 and the basketball "brain" of a 1, when you analyze the all time greats, there is Jordan and then there are all others.
Only Bird and Johnson are even in the same conversation. Both will admit Jordan was a better "basketball" player, despite the 3 of them playing different positions.

I hope this is a troll. Really.
Michael Jordan and debt does not compute.
I'm beginning to realize this whole thread is a troll and I fell for it.

Did Michael Jordan get suspended for 2 years for gambling?
I have always wondered if this was true.
His "retirement" from basketball to play baseball was actually a suspension for gambling on the game, but since he was bringing so much money to the game, they kept it on the down low.
But seriously, of course, he was suspended for gambling. And allowed back for the reasons you point out. But Pete Rose is still banned from baseball. Funny how he was banned AFTER his ability to make money for the game.
It's just coincidence.
