Take the toro in and get your money back. Get a Honda. Seriously, the single cylinder Honda mower is the most efficient engine in the world. You may never have to deal with the oil for 15 years.

There's a line on the dip stick to tell you the right amount of oil.

Pull it out, wipe it off, stick it in and see if it is at the proper level.

Is this your first lawn mower?

It could be that it just needed to run some with fluids in it. That you overworked it in grass before the fluids could fully circulate through the engine

Or you used the wrong oil

I think that is probably what you should do....

Return it and get the Toro with the Honda GCV engine.

Once you put an hour on it with the break in oil change and refill with Mobil 1 10w30. Wont have to change oil again for like 3 years.

And always use ethanol free gas.

I was going to get the Honda but it wouldn’t fit in my car. We’re having a party tomorrow night and I wanted to get the lawn done tonight

Ok. Now, please understand that I do this stuff all day at work, and I’ve seen all sorts of stuff that people have done, and I don’t mean to insult you by asking you some simple questions....but are you sure you put the oil in the crankcase? Did you remove the oil dipstick to put it in?

Thanks mate I used the oil that came in the box tho. You might be right in that I did cut some long crazy fast growing Oregon grass immediately and didn’t let it settle in

Just because you put the "whole bottle in" doesn't mean didly squat...it can still be low.

A quart or a quart and a half is pretty typical...may not be anything wrong at all.

Also, interior of engines is often coated with rust preventative, so you may just be seeing that burning off on initial startup.

It’s not gonna blow white smoke being underfilled with oil.

Seriously? It was a pretty big bottle. And I did kind of check the dipstick and it def wasn’t low. It was too dark to get a great reading but it was way up past the crook

Why would you take a one day old mower to have it repaired? Return the shite.

Hopefully - that sounds promising.

Sounds like tomorrow I’ll

1. Check oil
2. Research here and YouTube

Thanks all and to all who give replies henceforth.

Make it easy for yourself and just do like everyone has suggested and return it for the one with the proven Honda engine.
