I don't think his friend is mad at him. I think he validated what his friend was thinking and his friend left to go think things through.
Thank God the buddy isn’t an overly irrational person. Having that seed planted when you’re already in a bad emotional state could have lead to a dangerous situation when the buddy returned home.
I believe the wife is post-menopausal and her libido has dried up. The go get a GF remark was more about her expressing an inadequency to satisfy her lovers needs. The husband should have been told to “circle the wagons, empathize more, court your wife like you did in your 20’s, and that it is only a phase they’ll need to get through together”

Sadly, this marriage is probably done for either way.
Scenario 1 - women tend to test men by doing stupid shite. Men usually see through this inevitable trap, so their response is always going to be counter to the genuine response. For example, if wife thinks Buddy is cheating, she'll throw that out there almostvin a way to see if it's true and allow him to reconcile his own indiscretion. However, if Buddy is cheating, he certainly won't use that as an opportunity to now come clean but rather deny in fear that she's on to him. Either way, Buddy is going to say no, and wife didn't get the response she wanted. Instead, Buddy now questions his own wife's fidelity while wife is now questioning Buddy's based on his refusal to the girlfriend request. Trust issues arise and marriage fails.
Scenario 2 - Wife has a Jody and feels guilty. She wants strange sex and enjoys it over her husband. She wants him to be happy and find a girlfriend. That way the marriage can either continue in paper and for public / social purposes OR it can end on good terms. Marriage itself is already over either way.
Your assessment is spot on. Scenario 2 is the likely answer. Your Buddy asked and you gave him an answer. Guys don't like all that consoling drama bullshite. He already suspected it or he wouldn't have discussed it with you. You have him the validation he needs so after he hires a lawyer he'll be back just keep the beer cold.
As for your wife's comment, I would be terrified. This means that she too has likely considered getting a Jody, and based on your assessment now realizes that there's no easy way out of y'all's marriage. She will instantly tell Buddy's wife, and when the dust settles, it will be you and Buddy drinking beer on a Salvation Army couch bitching about about child and spousal support payments.

Men and women are different. She doesn't have to be having a carnal side relationship, she could be having an emotional side relationship.

Is this a popular term? It seems like a rather feminine name for a male side piece.

"Jody" is the term used to describe an individual taking advantage of a Soldier away from home.
Cadences used to be called "Jody calls".

Your friend was coming out of the closet to you because he suspected you are also gay. He wanted you to say that his wife really meant for him to get a boyfriend, that being you.

Probably didn't cross the line, but maybe use some tact.

She is cheating and is mad that you put that kind of doubt in his mind

Here is an idea. Why not call your buddy and check in with him to make sure he is ok and say “dude, did I cross the line with my comment”. If he thinks so, say “sorry, man. You want go get a beer?”. Then move on.
