DFW Nasty Weather Outlook on 6/23 (Sunday)

From Steve McCauley

quote:
As mentioned in posts from earlier this afternoon, sinking air in the wake of our little MCV we saw earlier today should prevent storms from moving into the Metroplex tonight.
A potentially complex situation is developing for late Sunday afternoon and evening as strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across much of north Texas (including nearly 100% of the Metroplex).
There are two possible weather scenarios for tomorrow: (1) A squall line organizes to the NW late tomorrow afternoon and sweeps SE into the Metroplex tomorrow evening; (2) A separate cluster of storms also moves into SE Oklahoma and NE Texas and moves S merging with the squall line coming in from the NW.
Of these 2 scenarios, the first one is almost guaranteed to happen. The second scenario is merely "likely" rather than guaranteed.
Regardless of whether scenario 2 occurs, scenario 1 will have torrential rain, pea to tennis ball hail (mostly pea to golf ball, however), 40 to 70 mph winds gusts, and brief tornado spinups possible with some - BUT NOT ALL - of the storms. The most intense storms will be the ones that can remain isolated and detached from the squall line before everything merges into one big mess Sunday evening.
Rainfall amounts will range from 0.10" to locally over 4 inches with flash flooding possible in the extreme downpour areas. If scenario 2 also occurs, the potential for more numerous flooding events will go up.
I have drained BOTH ponds sending 100,000 gallons of water to the wetlands in preparation for the possibility that both scenarios play out. You see, if I did not drain them, the squall line and the other storm cluster would merge precisely over Kaufman County.
How's that for the scientific method!

Does Dallas ever have good weather?

Jaqueline Kennedy had just commented on how nice the weather was when the plane arrived on November 22, 1963.

Getting tired of the weekend Hurricanes.

The pattern is looking to break late next week with a nice hot high pressure building over the central US.
For tomorrow, you've got an unusually strong upper low diving down. It's a cold one too, snow reported all over Colorado today.
Good recipe for storms in the southern plains.

I've wanted to talk to 1 of you OT mets ever since Thursday
how on Earth did a tornado get through without any kind of watch or warning from the NWS?
like seriously... Thursday morning's tornado in Tioga & Ball, La. had 0 warning attached to it when it came through at 3:15 AM
at night and no alert from the NWS... luckily no one was killed b/c there were numerous trees through roofs

Sooo... moving kiddo into his camp cabin in Van, TX tomorrow afternoon then driving home is going to blow.

I don't know what happened there. No watch I kind of understand, system was supposed to be fading as it got to you (and was). Of course, doesn't mean much for you locally when it can still drop a tornado.
How the warning was missed? I'm not sure on that either. I saw the storm report and it was over a small area. Probably didn't show up but for a frame or two at the most. Was there a severe warning on at the time?
I know it was carrying a severe when it got into LIX's domain and it didn't seem like there was much reason for it on the radar. So probably based on the damage reports behind it.
Can't really say much more than idk.

Lucky for sure. It's the sort of thing the weather service definitely doesn't want to happen. No warning. No watch. Overnight.

there were no warnings... when I got to work that morning I even double checked the LCH twitter feed to see if they put anything out... but nothing... the only thing was a significant weather advisory
I guess I'm kinda aggravated about it b/c... not only was I hit... but when I was woken up by it I opened my weatherbug app... looked at the radar and saw what looked like a "donut hole" feature in the reflectivity right on top of me that I had seen in other tornado images
but since I hadn't gotten a warning... I kinda wrote it off as an anomaly... but it turns out that was right as the storm was coming through
I guess we could use this to say Alexandria needs a radar

I'd be frustrated too, man. It's the worst type of warning miss. I'm sure the LCH office spent some time figuring out happened.

Get Baton Rouge some coverage while we're at it.

there were 2 houses on my street that had trees go through the roof... those people were amazingly lucky
there was a house some ways away from me that was completely bifurcated by a tree that was uprooted by it

I wonder if this bad weather ever has long-term effects on people wanting to move to a nicer climate? May sound extreme, but at some point I’m sure this gets exasperating.

Sunday’s and bad weather in the DFW metroplex is a new trend. 3 weeks straight now
