I can't say that it will ever be common to have wireless charge roads everywhere, but this is proven technology and at the very least it will be common in the garages of EV owners. I can also see it becoming common in parking garages and places with drive-throughs.

Agree. There are too many hazards that would destroy a highway equipped with this. But put it where vehicles move at low speeds and you might be able to control all the variables that would degrade the effectiveness of this.

why not just build cars like street cars but use DC motors you roll out hook up the imaginary endless grid of power and off you go.

everyone with a modicum of common sense (and rudimentary observational skills) knows what will happen to this.
What do you think will happen?

Maybe nothing much comes of this particular project, but wireless charging is going to be the killer feature for EVs in 5-10 years. This is not some futuristic tech, it exists and it's been in use for years. Like any tech it will continue to be refined, but you can buy a wireless charging pad for your garage right now. In-motion charging has been demonstrated by several companies.

Wireless charging will be a nice revenue stream for businesses and government entities alike.

Power can even flow in both directions, enabling vehicles to serve as energy storage.

So if your car is fully juiced, will this power strip use your vehicle as an energy source? I supposed that's a preferred alternative to overcharging.

A couple other thoughts:
- Regular roadways stay junk for years before they get repaired. This system would no doubt be more expensive to install/repair.
- Would components of an ICE vehicle be damaged by driving over this?

novel controls and shielding technology to handle stray emissions
I'd love to hear more about this novel "shielding technology" for EMF radiation, especially when it comes to pacemakers and wearable medical devices.

I wonder how much power is lost/wasted with wireless charging?

If it's anything like a phone it is north of 50%. Only good thing they will not have to plow that road due to heat build up.

Who knows how this turns out.
I'm just impressed by how many many wireless charging experts are here on the OT.

How’s that working for LA? How many people besides the wealthy that have any solar at all in this state.

Not sure if you are serious here. By and large, solar customers in Louisiana are generally low income

Good luck when the salt and snow trucks tackle that shite. Absolutely obliterates roads

Absolutely fricking this.

Epically dumb

Proof of concept fails a lot of the time, it is how you learn and identify unexpected variables.

One would assume they will be using concrete which has multiple times the life of asphalt even in the two season areas like Detroit.*

All the potential issues with road degradation are approachable it just costs more per mile than a standard asphalt road. When you have these short sections you can approach them differently than the other 1000s of miles of roads.

It is amazing to see how much of a Luddite many people can be. Rome wasn't built in a day but it would never have been built if someone didn't lay the first stone.

*Detroit is one of the areas that has two seasons: winter and road repair season

Oh, you mean like solar roadways and sidewalks that have both proven to be failures with millions of dollars wasted?

This is another pie-in-the-sky venture by a small company to siphon tax dollars because politicians are scientifically illiterate, as well as most of their voters.

This is a first generation demonstration project .

No, it's not. This company setup a demonstration in Sweden. At cost of over $12,000,000 for a mile.

Yes, a tractor trailer with multiple induction hubs as a best case scenario.

It would actually be far, far less not to mention the more vehicles attempting to use the system in a given area would have to share the power delivered.

Nope, this project is exactly the same as solar roadway projects, lots of hype and tax dollars funneled into something that will never deliver.

Surely they could use that electricity to slightly heat the road possibly eliminating ice on roads. That’d be a cool by product.

Pipe dream, that exact same thing was offered by those peddling solar roadways except it didn't stand up to the laws of physics.
