Lots of weddings are absolutely fricking stupid and ridiculously expensive. Special day my arse. Go off and get married quietly then use the wedding money to make your married life start off easier and better.

What's different in having a destination wedding and attending a friend's wedding that lives somewhere else? I'm attending a wedding in Houston in a couple of months. I still have to fly from Charleston to Houston ($300). I still have to rent a hotel for two nights ($375). I still have to rent a car for two nights ($42). That's $717.00 right there.
That is a good point.

Going to one in Europe next month and I think it is going to be incredivle. Those that could afford it or make it work with their schedules are going. Those that couldn't aren't going. No one is being forced to go.

Who cares what other people do?

And FTR, my wedding was not expensive and was held on family property that was free to use. We did this for the reasons you stated. We did pay for good booze, food, and music though. Those three things were were we focused our money and it turned out being relatively affordable since it wasn't an enormous invite list.

It's their wedding... Why is your opinion important to them?

Well, you don't just go for a 2 day trip. You turn it into a 5 day or week vacation. I'm sure you can give up 4 or 5 hours to attend the ceremony and enjoy the open bar/food after.

I'm embarrassed for you. Stop complaining and live your life how you want. Don't want to do something that costs a lot of money? THEN DON'T DO IT. Be a fcking adult. Make a decision and then keep living your life. You sound like a woman.
There's a difference between real life behavior and talking about things on a message board.

Don't go. Or take a long trip.

One of my best friends is having a destination wedding and I'm in it, but in his and her complete defense he lives in Denver away from everyone and he lived in Aspen. He also told us a year ago and I think everyone is looking forward to it. Should be a blast.

One of my wife's best friends is getting married in Ireland next year. My wife told her that we just couldn't swing it right now when she asked for her to be in the wedding. The friend understood.
Your fiance could have said no.

Dang that's awesome. You can't make that into a family vacation or something?
I guess those flights are stupid expensive though.

I went to a wedding in Destin a couple of weeks ago, and some of us had this exact conversation. We were also saying that a destination wedding is really preferable because who wants to go through all the expense and hassle of traveling just to go to Baton Rouge or some regular city.
