Destin is nice, but I prefer Orange Beach.

Nostalgia, ease of location, or simplicity... or a combination of all of the above. I truly prefer Orange Beach over Destin and I cannot place exactly what it is. Water and restaurants being the two negatives. But I do not go into the water except to purge anyways.
Reasons why I love it.
1. Closer to home
2. Flora-Bama
2 better condos
3. Less traffic
4. Good restaurants (Destin wins but OBA not bad).
I’d add this addendum also... there’s a reason the property values for OBA condos are higher. It’s because the market agrees with me! Cheers boys. I’m slapping my ice chest over the shoulder and gonna haul our 135 lbs of chairs, umbrellas and speaker to the sand.

Which is why you go on a beach vacation to begin with.

I prefer neither of those options.

No
I go once a year to somewhere from Gulfshores to the east side of Destin. Been to almost every beach down there. Early on it was based on where I could find better deals, etc.
Three summers ago we went to Destin and I don't remember what was happening traffic wise, but it took us 5.5 hours to get there. Traffic was a mess the whole week there.
I think I'm pretty content with Orange Beach now. I've got damn good restaurants here in Nola, so I don't really care that much about dining out while at the beach.
The biggest factor to me is picking condos that aren't too big and not going on holiday weeks. I couldn't imagine ever being down there for the 4th of July.

Screw Destin and OB....drive a little further and get to Watercolor, SeaGrove Beach or Alys Beach.
1. The extra hour and half pays big dividends over the course of your trip
2. Screw Flora-Bama and the redneck tourist trap that it is. Find a cool local hang out, with old hippies jamming to some cool tunes. Hang out with people that can carry a conversation.
3. Screw condos. Rent an entire home in a beach community.
4. With the exception of holidays, the majority of traffic in the 30a communities is bikes and go-carts.
5. Why settle for "not bad" or something that barely beats " not bad" when you can have freaking awesome?

Destin is for families or toned-down spring breaks
OB/GS is for partying

Grand Isle Beaches then Fouchon Beach then 30A then Destin then OB and in that order.

FloraBama and slightly lower cost are the only two reasons that OB would be preferred over Destin IMO.

I can't fricking stand condo beach towns. I'm not a beach guy in the first place, but sharing a building with a bunch of drunk, loud Yankees is just plain terrible. Give me a little hamlet.

THANK. YOU.
The entire west florida gulf coast from the Cedar Key on down to Marco Island is far & away better than the tourist traps of OB or Destin.
You're on vacation. Wtf do you need to be "closer to home" for? Worst excuse possible. Leave your GD bubble for a change.
