You would be in a smaller, shittier boat

I actually have...I rode out a hurricane in the Pentagon dorm in the early 90's. Walked through the quad during a break in the squalls.

Just go and find a good beach bar and pretend it's a hurricane party.

Probably the biggest worry would be finding decent high ground to park the car.

We went to Panama City beach last October when a hurricane was moving in. We got there about 4 hours before it hit. It turned out to be just a tropical storm. Our condo was on the beach and it was pretty cool to watch the storm come in. FYI, we had an 8 year old and one year old.

Same boat as you but we're going. Me and three teenage girls who have plans already on how to spend time inside.
Hopefully we'll get a decent day or two. Or three.

So, you would leave your house to go to a hotel or condo and all be crammed indoors with nothing to do?
I would use the storm as an excuse to get my deposit back and maybe head west to Texas or Mexico

Unless you biught travel insurance most places will not refund anything unless there is a mandatory evac order.

He isn’t getting anything back for this storm. There won’t be a mandatory evacuation

Its gonna be upgrade to a disturbance and flood warnings are going to be in effect expecting over 6" of rain in many parts. I'd like my chances of fighting them thru my credit card company using a reversal of charges. The credit card issuer is more lenient in awarding the chargeback to their customer and could care less about the hotel....before arguements otherwise, just know I'm in that part of the card industry.
Sure, I agree simply rain wouldnt suffice as an excuse....but this is a little more than that.
The earlier the better, I would have already asked the hotel, and if denied, I'd call my card company and say I'm not going to be forced to bring my children into those conditions.

I was in Destin for Hurricane Danny, it wasn't too bad. But I was a college kid who liked danger and adventure. I don't know how much fun I would have had with a family. Only you can decide how your family would handle it.

Even with travel insurance, all the insurance I've been offered at the time of purchase also said it only pays if it is a mandatory evacuation.

What a drama queen. You honoring your contractual obligations is not going to “force” you to bring your kids to the beach when there is a storm. You’d simply forfeit your deposit as laid out in your rental agreement.

He's not being a drama queen. Nobody wants to take a vacation in crap like this. It wasn't that long ago that I remember hearing that some of the policies would allow you to cancel if a named storm was heading into the area.
I had a two night stay booked at the Grand Marriott in Point Clear for this weekend and we called yesterday and they said no problem. They were already instructed to waive any cancellation fees.
Fck the condo owners. They've been making a killing the last four years. They can get over it.

And nobody is forcing him to like he is falsely claiming. Thus my drama queen comment.
