Major depression is on the rise for the third year in a row, affecting nine million Americans insured by one of the nation's largest providers, new data reveals.

Americans' mental health has been in something of a tailspin in recent years, with more and more people reporting that they are anxious, depressed and even suicidal.

Depression seems to go hand-in-hand with other conditions as the vast majority of those with the mood disorder also suffer from another ailment.

Rates of depression varied significantly from state to state in the US, hitting the Midwest and Northeast particularly hard, according to the latest data from health insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Are you going to post that state?

Edit: it's Hawaii.

Mental health and physical health are directly related. Americans are getting fatter. Americans are getting more depressed.

Like the great Elle woods once said: "exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands. They just don't."

If you read the article you’ll see that it’s Mississippi.

Lots of data out there that suggests depression and anxiety are linked with the rise of social media.

If I made this thread and was thinking how can I be an a-hole, that's about the only thing I could come up with besides maybe posting a penis as the link

depression

People use this term for everything now. If the line at Starbucks is too long: "I'm depressed." Sometimes it's real, many times it's not. The term has become meaningless.

I don't know how much this plays a factor, but I have to think that some of it is related to how unrealistic people are with their children.

Parents don't want to expose their kids to this and that.. And want them to be proud of everything they do, even if it sucks. Then they get out into the real world and life is a lot different than from the way they were raised.

And it seems like more parents are friends with their kids instead of actually being a parent so when they have to be in a world where their parents can't be there for them all the time, they think life is "hard".

Also, I think social media plays a factor as well. Kids are communicating with their peers beyond school. If something happens to a kid at school and he/she is getting teased, etc.. It doesn't stop when they go home. It's a different world.
