Dental Question

My lower jaw rear most molar is cracked. The dentist wants to do a root canal and cap it. The other option is to have it extracted. I had all of my wisdom teeth removed years ago. I cant really chew on that side and very sensitive to cold. Im sure I'll get alot of sarcastic remarks but hoping to get some honest feedback on whether I should have the cap done or just have the tooth pulled. I'd appreciate some constructive feedback : )

I had the same situation and went with a canal and crown. No regrets.

Let your boyfriend drill in your mouth

Keep your teeth as long as you can.

This is the proper treatment..

Thanks Wiley ... I have heard a few stories about problems arising when capping molars. Glad yours worked. It would be easy to have it pulled but wondering what typical ramifications are if I pull it. That would leave me with one molar down there remaining. Id like to hear from folks that have had the molar removed and how it impacted them after.

My husband had the same thing - get the root canal and cap - you will be able to chew in that side after the root canal/cap

Root canals arent as bad as they're made out to be. Just go to a good dentist that does them a lot. Make sure your insurance will cover a nice chunk of it.
also, make sure they numb the frick out of it. if you can feel anything whatsoever in that area of your face, ask for MORE anesthetic.
Even if you hate pain meds, take them. Waking up in middle of night with that pain is not something you want to experience.

Thanks Yum ... I was leaning toward having the tooth pulled but after reading the comments I think I'll schedule the work for canal and crown.

Gold crown will last forever if you have the option. Porcelain with chip or break down with 15-20 years

Do the root canal and crown. As long as there is no cracking below the surface down toward the roots, that's the way to go.

Root canal and cap, but have the root canal done by an endodontist, not a dentist.

If it is not cracked off below the gum line they can make a composite tooth out of filler that works great. They put a metal ring around the tooth, prep it, fill it up, then hit it with light to harden.
I had one and it's holding up fine and was around the price of a normal filling.
Make phone calls and price around. Unethical dentists won't give this to you as an option and will gladly siphon your wallet out of as much as they can.

Thanks Mizz ... I'll definitely look into this as an option. Greatly appreciate

You bet. I've had this for at least 5 years now and it's fine.
If I had to guess I'd say they're using the same material they using on fillings now. A kind of composite that looks like Silly Putty but hardens well enough to chew with. Hell, I'm still chewing on ice with it. (I know I shouldn't).
When it comes to dental it pays to call around and price around. I've saved thousands not taking the advice of people who used to do my dental work.

I got mine pulled and asked for the gold ones

Root canals are not as bad as people say.
