What are the odds this place just ends up the way it is now?

The Sherwood Oaks Apartments, a 280-unit complex, will replace the Brandywine condos on Darryl Drive

Sherwood Oaks was developed for households with an income below 60% of the Baton Rouge median, which comes out to just under $33,000, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. But Fisher said the complex will feature a range of amenities, such as granite countertops, washer-dryers in all units, a fitness center, pool, community center and security gates. “These are market quality units,” he said.

Brandywine, which has been synonymous with blight in Baton Rouge, has been the site of crime and the subject of property disputes for years.

So they are tearing down a dilapidated complex where crooks and thugs used to hang out to replace it with a new complex where crooks and thugs will hang out.

BRILLIANT!!!

Great. So the ghetto apartments will just look better when the news crew is there covering the latest shooting.

It will still be in the hood. The physical structure isn't why there's been so much crime there.

What a shame it will be to remove this cultural icon from this earth.

murders will just happen in front of updated buildings, similar to the mixed housing in new orleans. It's not a housing problem, it's a neighborhood and culture problem. I give them credit for trying something though

That place looks very dilapidated. It could use quite a bit of lapidating.

Brandywine has been a clusterfrick for years and not just the renters or the property itself.

The management has been horrid. Combine that with the building having utilities on a master account instead of individual meters per unit and you get hundreds of thousands in unpaid utilities and shitstorms whenever they try to shut off utilities for non-payment.

100% chance it ends up exactly the same.

Over / Under 1.5 months before the first murder.

I don’t give them credit for trying, it’s a waste.

MAN, I hope this place is finally bulldozed. I grew up in Red Oaks in the 70-80s. It was an amazing place to be a kid, great neighborhood. I used to hunt squirrels right where this site is located. When the Catholic church sold this property and these apartments were built (mid 70's), there was much opposition. At first, it was nice, townhome/condo ownership where tenants cared and kept up the property. Then Section 8 was forced into the mix and the decline was imminent. Now, it looks like something from a 3rd world country. The owners are local guys from that area who just wanted to clean up the mess and make something of the site. It has taken them years to get to this point with all the legal wranglings. I applaud this effort even tho the natives will ultimately just destroy it again.
