I hate to say it, but you almost have to hope for it to get further south and at least make a partial landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula.

I worry more about the surge churned up by the big storm while it’s a major. Katrina weakened before landfall, but brought a huge surge.

Duke, I hate to compare storms because every one is different, but as of now Hilda 1964 is looking like a pretty close match.
6 days earlier on the calendar, but cooler water near the LA coast and a trough coming in from the NW and North around the time of landfall are even mentioned in the summary.
The landfall pressure was 950 mb and max winds 115 mph just west of Morgan City.
The main thing I hope does not materialize with Delta are the tornadoes. Hilda produced an F4 that killed 22 and injured 165 in my hometown of Larose. My parents and relatives knew most of the people killed and always talk about that storm.
