Sometimes a diagnosis is made based on the clinical picture. Sometimes life and death decision making should err on the side of reason and experience.

Nobody is denying that but sometimes people just have abscesses on their arse or URIs

Ok so let all the third year med students loose. That's not an idea I would advocate for and none of them would either because they know their own limitations thankfully

I watched a butt abscess kill a guy during medical school

I'm sure he was an advocate of a healthy lifestyle and was in picture perfect health.
I once saw a tuna can up a dudes arse in CRNA school.

That still doesn't answer any question I asked.
If the MD lobby is going to win, I'd hope y'all would have #s justifying your stance.

I've just spent an entire career of watching doctors fall back on the "it's called practicing medicine for a reason" mantra to absolve themselves of all liability when they cut the wrong organ, take out the wrong eye, or show up to surgery drunk.
If nurses can make an argument that they are better, or at least just as good, then they have my vote to expand the market and let capitalism take effect.

There's bad behavior in all professions. I have a high opinion of NPs, but that story was true. Not naming names, and I'm sure that story could be found on the web. Just like disciplinary actions against MDs and other professionals can be found.

How many clinical hours would these nps have?
Posted on 5/17/16 at 4:06 pm to LATigerdoc
Don't know. That's a question for the nurses in here.

I think articles about the bill have mentioned like 200-2000 hours at different times. That's gotta be like < 1/5 of MD training if you're using the 2000 #. That may be a conservative estimate - it could be an even bigger gap I'm just totally guessing here

And those are?
Seeing that your only posting involves medical legislation, those should be ready for you to produce.

My wife has been in practice 13 yrs. I guess that comes out to at least 22,000 clinical hours. Would that be enough? By the way, she has no desire to open her own clinic.

Ha..I bet you are. I've met a handful of doctors over a 25 yr ER/Trauma nursing career who didn't seem to think they were too good to do what we do in the trenches.
And for the record, no, I do not think that NPs, PAs or CRNAs should practice autonomously.

Yes that's exactly what it means. And, I'm sure we'll see NP clinics pop up in the underserved neighborhoods of Lakeview and the Garden District in New Orleans.
If physicians are unwilling to work in these areas why would having NPs there be a problem? As someone else said isn't some type healthcare better than no healthcare?
