This is absurd. Obviously the management is incompetent and didn’t portray the situation accurately. I told her to get something in writing but when they pushed back, I let it go because there was no leverage. She’d have to work out of state otherwise.
Read this outloud to yourself dude.
Your wife couldn't negotiate the written terms of her employment and you think the company is stupid?
Oh lawd.

It’s not absurd. They aren’t firing the guy. Which means he can still do the job. They’re trying to push him out for financial reason. If they didn’t know when he was going to retire, they should not have offered your wife the job. Also, you don’t know why he hasn’t retired. Maybe he has debt he’s trying to pay down. Maybe he needs the health insurance. You just don’t know.

That’s called a retention package - he’s likely got to sit there until it’s done to get some type of additional incentive/compensation.
Or that’s run it’s course and they are paying him way to much to sit there and he’s a cheap sob

Obviously they don't want him gone that bad..
Do you think this guy owes it to you to retire so your wife can have his job?

“Are you going to retire or what”

Sounds like your wife made a dumb decision.

Your wife is making nearly six figures working 10-20 hours a week. You really think she's putting in her best effort to go full time? Dude, she's got it fricking made

My wife has been part time for going on 5 months.

I still advocate letting him put it in your wife's butt daily.

My wife took a job because they are looking to replace an older employee. The guy is 71. It was communicated to her he would be retiring soon after. She left a full time job because it’s a pretty good gig if you have the full time job.
A couple of learning opportunities here:
1. NEVER accept something like this if the person that is supposed to be retiring doesn't know they are retiring.
2. Don't accept a PT position in an instance like this. No worthwhile management with an ounce of common fricking sense hires someone PT to take over for someone else when they "are about to retire". The position is full-time or full-of-shite-time.

My wife has been part time for going on 5 months. She has approached management multiple times about the plan but they have yet to provide one. Utterly incompetent middle management.
What has been their response, exactly? Does she have an avenue to go above their head(s)? Did she get this wunderjob offer in writing? Has she proven valuable enough to give them a "shite or get off the pot" ultimatum? Can you two survive on just your check if she bails on them for being incompetent pussies?

I just need to find out if this guy plans on leaving at any point. I don’t know how else to handle this besides straight up having my wife to ask him when he plans to leave.
If your wife is a friendly sort then it's not a problem.
Wife: has a question about something or acts like she has a question about something so she asks him
Old Man: provides answer
Wife: Thank you so much, I was really stuck on that. You seem to know so much about (this). How long have you been in (this field)?
Old Man: answers
Wife: Wow! Have you been here that whole time or have you worked other places?
Old Man: answers
Wife: seeming a bit impressed That wears me out just hearing about all that. How do you keep going after all those years?
Old Man: answers
Wife: How long do you want to keep doing this?
