Catahoulas can have naturally light colored eyes.

Name him Leppard.

I don't know how you will be able to train him, but you will be able to pull alot of MILF tail at the dog park.

He doesn't appear to be blind. I noticed his odd eyes right away and told my husband of my concerns for the dog's hearing and eyesight.

My husband brought this dog home for some reason but he doesn't fool with it much. That is all on me which is ok because all the cats and dogs here know I am the source of treats and good food.

We have a blonde lab who is the best dog ever and helps to care for this dog by watching over it and modeling behavior. The pup follows her everywhere. We also have 4 cats who are friendly with it and correct the pup with a swat if it tries to take their food.

The dog is an outside dog. He is in a safe place with hundreds of acres to roam with no danger from cars and such. He stays around the house, only roaming with the lab. If I call the lab, the pup follows her and shows up with her. The pup is just hyper and needs to learn to calm down.

Most of his bad behavior is just puppy stuff and a lack of training due to his deafness.

Umm, I'm a chick. My home and property is pretty much a dog's dream because it is hundreds of acres to roam with a small bayou, wildlife to hunt and things to explore.

The gators found in our bayou are attracted to the ducks, chickens, and other animals on the property are removed to our ponds which are across the highway which is probably where they came from. We gator hunt each year (legally w/tags) and the ponds have a thriving population there. When we have a large animal die (cow, donkey, sheep) we bring it to the ponds where it is promptly taken care of by the gators.

Hand signals. I make a point to teach these to all of my dogs in the event that they ever go deaf. You can also mouth the words out and sometimes they react to both the hand signal and the pronunciation.

He is full blooded Catahoula with pedigreed parents. I asked about his parents and bloodline and there are other reported deaf pup from one of the breeder of the pup's dad.

He said he has had other deaf pups that he refused to sell or give away to someone who wanted the deaf one and put them down instead. I guess that is standard procedure for a breeder but I could not do that (nor would I be a breeder anyway). He will be neutered and have a good home here on our property.

Oh, and keep him on a lead or tie out for a relatively long time.

You won't be able to call him back otherwise.

Great Dog - another vote for Radar.

Try a stimulus collar for the easy training - one that simply vibrates. To get him to come to you sit/ stay etc...You may want to get one that provides some electronic stimulus as well to stop any bad behavior.

Deaf Dogs . Org Suggestions

Dogtra makes great collars.

Deaf dogs are tough. I have a deaf english bulldog and she is a handful. Hand signals are about the only thing that sometimes work. I look like an idiot waving my arms around in my backyard trying to get her attention. Best advice I can give you is keep him on leash when outside or keep him in a fence. If he goes after something there isn't much you can do. Hand commands don't do shite when they are running after another animal in the other direction. Luckily mine is an inside dog so I have control over that.

Just as a heads up, it's not terribly uncommon for mostly white Catahoulas to have health problems. I thinks it's common for white catahoulas to have liver problems.

I have had them for a few years. I'm down to my last two, they are 13 and 14. Be glad you have a male. The females are as mean as hell.

OP I commend you for taking on a companion that most would pass on.
Dogs are exceptional with hand signals I suspect this guy to be no different.

*I am concerned with him and traffic in any way, so a shock collar may help him understand the roadway is a no no. Also I suspect you do not let your pets wander, but this guy especially cannot wander unattended.

Well done, and bravo.

I have a deaf boxer that I got from a rescue group that was already trained. Having another dog definitely helps. There is a lot of good info on the Internet and i would recommend going to a trainer for help.
