Wife is debating whether it's worth taking a job that pays $25 an hour in exchange for cost of day care which would run around $1600 a month. Basically half of the paycheck will go towards the cost of day care.
She is not doing it for the money, she is just getting worn out being with a needy 5 months old baby all day; However, she feels guilty leaving the child at that young age in a daycare.

How can people with 2 or 3 young kids afford day care? you have to make at least 200K a year to afford it.

Pics of her and pending those, what would she be willing to do for say $200?

Just my two cents. No daycare can replace what your wife can give to your child. They both will have time to bond. She gets to raise y'all child, not some daycare worker. No amount of money can compare to that.

Wtf. Where do you live? Or maybe it's more for the new borns....idk. don't recall ever paying more than 4-500 a month...well I did cover my grandson for a couple months once at a top notch day care around here and it was almost 600.

Are you sure the child isn’t actually your father’s?

Could pawn some of that childcare cost off on him if so

our thoughts exactly, but she recently graduated and this job is a huge stepping stone towards a good career

Day care is a fricking racket. We’re going to be closed 3 days for Mardi Gras but we still expect you to pay a full weeks tuition

Ours was something like $800-900 for a newborn in BR 12 years ago.

This. If you can afford it then do it. It is definitely better for the child.

I wouldn't hire someone who can't take care of one baby without complaining.

$1600 per month for a single child? or is that for 3 kids?

In either case you should weigh a couple of other factors:

1-benefits. My wife gets a great rate on health insurance through her job, so it makes a lot of sense for her to work and cover her + our two children on her policy. Although the cashflow is not much better than a wash, the health insurance helps the case a bunch.

2- Sanity. I love my children to death, but if I had to spend every day taking care of them all day long, then I might go insane. Same for my wife. Sounds like your missus is in the same boat. Children are very demanding, and if yours is only 5 months, that is going to increase significantly very soon. If she feels worn out now, just wait.

My advice is to take the job, but if that rate is for a single child then you need to find a more reasonably priced daycare.

Just barely related but I had a friend working on an MFA in English and was looking to hire a nanny so she could work on her thesis.

The nanny she hired already had an MFA in English.

Isn’t that the job of a Mom? How many 5 month olds aren’t needy? And the escape hatch will only get her $20K/yr take home for what would seemingly be a very crappy job that would also wear her out.

Largely area dependent.

And if you have to put your kid in daycare and have the means to support it, you don't exactly want to budget shop

You get what you pay for.

Damn, I guess I can't recall my children being there before the age of 2-3. What did it go down to for you once you're kid(s) was/were older though?
