She had been driving it for 8 months or so and now it will not crank. She had a local look at it and he said she would have to go to the Ford dealer (not on island) and have them make her a new one to the tune of $400. Why would it work for so long and then just crap out? She is getting a lock sign on her dash when she tries to crank.

In my younger days I had this crap happen to me all too often. Its a hard lesson to learn to always pay for a second key so you have a spare.

Some people do this online. I think you mail them a key and they mail it back.

She may be able to mail it to the Ford Dealer and have them mail it back?

I'm assuming you included the location because getting to the Dealer would be a PITA?

ETA: Also go over with her and write down the make, model, year, etc. And personally I'd call around to locksmiths that are closer to see if they can help

could be the actual car battery

Seconding this notion that is likely the actual car battery on its way out. Happened to me on a Subaru. Started throwing lock signs l, wouldn’t allow cruise control set, not wanting to turn over with key in ignition, all lights would come on fine though.

My fob wasnt working once, replaced the battery and it still didnt work. Was the car battery.

And yes it would do some funky shite before that. Like maybe horn go off or it unlock but then not lock back.

wont hurt to check the car battery. Because if you get a fob mailed to you and it still doesn't work. It wasn't the fob.

Unless you have already done this.

How do you expect us to be able to help your daughter with her car key issues without pics? It's impossible to know how to go about fixing this without seeing pics of her feet and b hole first.

....agreed.

My wife’s key fob did this a while back when the battery was starting to diminish. She had to hold the fob near the start button and it cranked.

Kia produced a number of models without immobilizers for a. Inner of years. They were stolen so frequently and easily that they became nearly uninsurable.
