City Council Votes 11-4 to Remove Monuments

quote:

Erected in 1896, it’s the city’s oldest public monument. It sits between Dallas City Hall and the convention center.

Removing the monument is estimated to cost around $480,000.

The city must still get approval from the Landmark Commission before the memorial can come down. However, Preservation Dallas warned the council that the removal from a designated historical area would set a “dangerous precedent.

“We need to take this down. We don’t need to re-envision anything”, Dallas Councilman Kevin Felder said last Wednesday, February 6, during a briefing session regarding the monument. The city is tasked with a proposal to either rework the 65-foot tall statue with accurate historic context and information or dismantle the century-old monument.

Hopefully it will solve all the crime and racial division issues like it has in New Orleans.

I look forward to crime plummeting and for blacks to stop killing each other.

Nice work, Dallas.

How long until Houston starts removing Sam Houston stuff because its offensive to the beans?

Still not a done deal but who knows. In any case, at a 75% savings for removal over New Orleans, just more proof our Mexicans can work circles around your lazy Blacks and Crackers.

America already has so little in the way of long term history (relative to Europe) and these people want to destroy it because it “offends” a few sensitive tushies.

It’s disgraceful

As a Scot, I demand that Hadrian's wall be torn down.

As an Anglo-Saxon, I demand that statues of William the Conqueror be removed.

As a Southerner, I demand that all representations of William Sherman be destroyed.

All 30 people from 1860 Dallas must be rolling in their graves

Dallas doesn't exactly have any Civil War history to commemorate.

The monument was built during the turn of the century UDC monument building boom.

It’s still art. If this is torn down then all history should be torn down. Evil white men and all.

Not a single person on the entire planet was alive when this was erected. Very very very few even had parents alive during that time.

I wouldn't care what or to whom the statue is ... it's a rare piece of history. But it has to be torn down because of "feelings."

frick all this shite.

Don't think for a second that when these people have destroyed Confederate history that they'll stop there.

Mitch said the same thing... How much did it end up costing the taxpayers.

And this is what it gets you.

Go figure, a project in NOLA that isn't actually finished.
