Is there a reason to have trials in these situations, and if a trial is required, can he not be killed upon being found guilty?

Stupid DA already let him plea for lesser charge with a sentence of only 25 years to life . Apparently they did not want to do the work to go through a trial.

ny doesn't have the death penalty ... assume the plea is because they think he'll get life and won't fight it ... i've no idea how a judge could pass down anything but life w/out parole, tho new york's kind of lenient on violent crimes ...
