I was able to go today (sale starts tomorrow) and pick out things that I'd like to have.

My grandfather was a pilot on D-Day (One of a few Americans that flew with the British Royal Air Force; he flew 13 sorties that day) over Normandy. I found the Catholic Prayer Missal that was given "men of our armed forces" ... it has him name, number and a date which I assume is the date of either issue or commissioning.

I have no idea if he had this with him as he flew his missions but I'm so proud to have it.

I know ... csb ...

I can't believe no one in the family wanted it. His leather pilots skull cap and medals are in a shadow box somewhere with a pic of him in his leather bomber jacket .. guess my Aunt has it but I was crying when I found this.

I'll see if I can post pics in a bit.

His name was Robert Adams and he is in the 3rd and 4th pic

We all know D-Day happened a day late BUT if it had gone as scheduled my grandfather would NOT have been flying as he was in sick bay with inner ear problems that cleared up just in time.

He wrote this in a letter to my grandmother on June 13.
"I'll never forget the spectacle of D-Day. It was thrilling and did we have a grandstand seat. Seeing the firing at dawn was a rare and beautiful sight. The whole import behind it was thrilling. I felt so proud and so happy, just to look under my wing to right or left, and see the ghostly outlines of ships in the half light, blasting away at shore installations. To us who had waited so long, it was the beginning of our return home." June 13, 1944

(NONE of us knew wrote like this and my Aunt had NEVER seen this letter before)

Congrats on finding these things.

After my grandfather died, we found a bin full of letters that both he and his brother had written home to their grandmother. It was funny, because they were both written in a similar fashion to your grandfather's. They just wrote like that back then.

Serious fricking heroes though, all of them. I hope you had some good times with your grandfather.

I don't think I'd wasn't a memento from that grandfather. Unless you have a lead box.

Very cool. I was just going through my grandfather's WW2 stuff earlier this week. We found some paperwork that allowed him to bring a captured German Luger home but we dont know what ever happened to it.
