Civil War vets were probably saying the same thing about kids who fought in WWI, then WWI vets saying the same thing about kids who fought in WWII, etc.

I've seen Saving Private Ryan too many times to answer seaborne.. so I guess airborne. And Band of Brothers is great. Own it but only watched through it one time a long time ago. Need to see it again.

Glider pilots had balls of steel, or lots of booze before they flew.
Funny story - British actor Richard Todd played Major John Howard in The Longest Day. Howard commanded a British glider-borne unit that was the first to reach the famous Pegasus Bridge. They were later reinforced by paratroopers and ultimately forces led by Lord Lovat coming up from the beach (most of this is depicted in the film). A famous line in the movie, almost certainly an ad-lib, has Todd as Howard commenting, "The paras are always late."
Of course, Richard Todd himself was a paratrooper who participated in the operation and met Major Howard on Pegasus Bridge later that day. As many Hollywood folks who participated in the operation, Todd was actually offered the opportunity to play himself (albeit 15 years later). A fairly big British star at the time, he declined, "That part would be too small."

Scruffy was rewatching Band of Brothers yesterday. Great fricking show.
Question is, would you rather be a part of the airborne parachute assault or the marine landing assault?
There was a total of ~2500 airborne casualties and 10,000+ casualties involved with the landings.
Now, for reference, there were 13,000 paratroopers and ~156,000 soldiers landing on the beaches.
Pretty sure those numbers are right.
So, which invasion tactic would you rather be a part of?
"Landing on beaches" - does that mean that many landed under enemy fire (or a real threat of enemy fire)? Or did a portion of that come from people landing on already relatively secure beaches (secured at the cost of blood from the men who came before them, no doubt).
If not I think it should be re-asked as paratroopers vs first few waves on the beaches.

Y’all read way too deeply into a simple question.

If you're going to do this, then pare down the areas in which the paratroopers landed and analyze them.
And this will never end.

My great uncle was under Gen Bradley - I don’t remember which beach he landed on, he was in the first wave
He didn’t talk about it much, except that the water was red, and he was pinned down for 3 hours
The guys on either side of him were shot - one made it

Amphibious landing or amphibious assault

What a shite sandwich of a choice. Get blasted out of the sky and scattered behind enemy lines or get mowed down on a beach before you can even fire at the enemy. Incredible what those guys did.
Indeed. Also, frick Germany.

I'd rather be stillborne.

The highest casualty rate in the Army was by far the 8th Air Force, and it isn’t close. Hell, they lost more men than the entire Marine Corps did in the Pacific theater.

Regardless of the casualty numbers, no self-respecting soldier chooses to be a leg. So I am coming in hanging under a canopy.

As a woman I would have to join the resistance forces. Lesser recognized but they definitely did important work.

I get that, but the casualty rate in this case definitely skewed more heavily into the KIA variety.
