There’s your problem. When you are in shape you can put out plenty of output while staying in heart rate zone 3-4. Cycling is a great way to build your aerobic endurance btw. Don’t know about Fairbanks but Anchorage has a very active fat tire biking community. We are probably a month away from the lake freezing where I live (if it freezes this year), but that’s when most of us get our biking in. I do fly with my fat tire bike in the winter because there are so many great trails around Anc.

:) I'm referring to training to complete physical exhaustion. Imagine taking off up a hill on your bike as hard as you could pedal until your legs stopped working and your heart was about to explode. Itd take 20 minutes to catch your breath. Doing that in 10 degree weather will be rough on the ole throat.

Hmmmm. I end up with a bad cough when I strain my lungs in below freezing temperatures.

You probably have EIA (exercise induced asthma) it is diagnosed in a huge number of elite athletes but it is likely most people experience it especially in dry cold conditions but never push their body enough to be aware of it. I was diagnosed in my mid-20s but my cough didn't appear until after I finished exercising but I quickly learned when I started using a relief inhaler during rides. I used salbutamol which is WADA legal. By my mid-30s I "grew" out of it but the docs think it was just a result of not being able to produce the same level of effort as I could earlier.

Studies have shown roughly 20% of olympic athletes have EIA, higher in cyclists, higher still in cross-country skiing, and highest in swimming. Chlorine instead of cold/dry air is suspected in the latter.

(Serious) cyclists know the hell of anaerobic effort. Coming out of the saddle putting down 1500+ watts racing for the line or bridging to a breakaway is the picture of oxygen debt. The difference between a good and a great cyclist is the time to recover. It is the primary and most evident characteristic lost with age.

Serious endurance athletes know the importance of increasing their aerobic threshold so the can put out more watts while not producing lactic acid (going anaerobic). It’s why cycling is so important to their training.

I was doing it for a while but man as soon as I could get back to running, I did. Having to spend 10+ hours a week in the saddle to get a similar aerobic stimulus to my running was for the birds.

Makes me nervous before every workout.

Which I don't do on the highway you cretins! Ha

Ok I'm over it. Going to look up inhalers.

Why are they out in the highway in tights on a bicycle with a line of cars behind them?

It’s like they think they’re Neil Armstrong or something

Talk to your PCP. If it is just the rare high intensity in cold dry temps the juice may not be worth the squeeze. I also got it during hot dry weather which where I was living at the time was a significant part of the racing calendar.

All you bike haters are assholes. I fixed my weight problem without an injury and enjoy riding it. Meanwhile, you pay $50 a month to go hang out and maybe actually walk on a gd treadmill or sit on a stationary bike and listen to your fricking ipod. Go frick yourselves

You are not attempting to explain because there is no reasonable explanation for those comparisons. But man I was hoping you'd try.

Are they not all slow moving “objects” that are allowed to use the same road as motor vehicles? Do you not have to slow down and wait to pass? What’s the big fricking difference to you?

You have to be insane to use a motorcycle with how drivers are distracted these days with cellphones. A retard to use a bicycle on a road. Yeah you got the right but it’s not smart.
