Our pediatrician has ordered a CT scan for my one year old daughter. She has been vomiting and having diarrhea at night on and off for the past few weeks. A stomach virus made it way through the family recently so we attributed some of her stomach issues to it, but the rest of the family has recovered. When the pediatrician recommended to her mom a CT scan to ruled out a brain tumor I was shocked. I thought CT scans were unusual for young children in the past due to the high level of radiation. Are they more common and safe now?

All kidding aside, you need to do what is best for your child...

TD should not be the definitive answer in a case like this

Huh? A cranial CT? You sure not an abdominal CT?

If cranial, your doc should be the poster child for over utilization (i.e. defensive medicine).

Idk. But rotavirus can last 6weeks. With symptoms coming and going. Happened to us with each kid around the same age.

Drs always do this to parents. They are trying to cover their bases but damn is it scary. With the second kid they wanted to do all kinds of testing but we waited and it ran its course-6 weeks!

I would take the advice from the professional, not the OT. The amount of radiation is still very low, and early detection of cancer is the driving force here. Listen to the Dr.

We are going to go with the docs recommendations but I've gotten some decent medical advice from the OT.

Too common, but safer than they use to be. I would prob get a second opinion first if he is shooting in the dark.

Its not uncommon at all

Dont worry about it, do it

And an abdomen pelvis ct on a 1 year old is pretty much never appropriate. Head ct isnt unreasonable.

for the love of spaghetti monster this.

But at the same time, I have had a CT scan. It was really unpleasant.

Hope everything works out for your little one.

The radiation is alright for your kid. The levels won't hurt him from one CT.

Just to settle you nerves, flying in a plane is like 300 chest X-Rays. A pilot living in Denver receives 2-3 times the radiation a year than someone living on the coast. As long as your kid doesn't get 10 CT scans a year, he will be fine.

ETA:

One of my kids had one, and I was nervous like you. I reasearched the subject, and felt better afterwards.

I would think the bigger problem would be the kid freaking out. I had a CT scan on my leg a while back and after about 20 minutes I was ready to walk the frick out from sheer boredom. I would imagine sitting in there would scare the shite out of a baby.

That could be an issue. Many peds places are very proficient with dealing with that though.

I guess they're used to it. I just remember how insanely boring it was. I think I fell asleep a couple of times... and when the guy operating it would walk in I'd start asking him a million questions about how the machine worked.

I'd imagine they sedate a 1 y/o. That would concern me as much as the CT radiation.

You may be confusing a CT scan with an MRI. A CT scan is no big deal.

Depends what your are having scanned, but a head CT takes about 30 secs. Nothing to it. Now they may want to give the kid something to relax just hold the head if the kid seems okay. Either way is no biggie.
