Am I the only person that has never used and does not understand Door Dash at all?
I'll just go get it myself. Why would I want someone else bringing me anything but Pizza?

What makes pizza so special? Why don't you go and get that yourself?

Hell I had a guy drop off the remains of my cremated dog insisted that he meet me with the remains and he hit me up for a tip because the owners make all the money

ut I will ask the question that everyone on the OT wants to know: any real life experiences with horny housewives who want to tip you with something other than $$?

I knew this would be the first really, really stupid question, but first of all: I do usually go get myself. I don't understand food deliveries at all for the most part.
But what do you think makes Pizza acceptable for more people for delivery?

Why is it "really, really stupid" though? You apparently don't understand the concept of food deliveries, but then create an exception for one type of food. It's a little odd.

I don't understand what you don't understand about it.

Depends on if you order extra anchovies....

As far as average tip, it super depends. Some don't tip anything, and I don't take those. It shows up as an order that will pay me $3. I have a $6 minimum. The orders I take people usually tip anywhere from $4 to $7. Which, if base is $2.50, usually comes out to $6.50-$9.50. I can do 2-3 of these in an hour because I also have a miles per dollar requirement that I set.
Odysseus32,
Now that you explained how the tips work, can you break down how DD makes their money? Like what do they charge from the Gross Bill Receipt?
Example: I buy PF Changs for an even $100.00 cost from only PF Changs charges. What is the complete breakdown in charges; what PF Changs get, What DD gets, What you get?
Here in Abu Dhabi, they have similar services called Talabat, NOON, Deliveroo, EasyEats, Uber Eats and another couple. In Indonesia there is Grab Eats, GoJek Motorbike delivery services and taxis and others.

I love DoorDash and I know I pay a premium for it. Friday nights are a pretty common time for us to use the service. We generally like to eat around 7 or so. By then we're a glass or two into the wine and probably an edible, too. Not the best conditions to drive. So I think nothing of spending a bit extra to push the button and have food delivered. Just pause the movie, dish out the food and go on with our night. And good food tastes even better after the edibles kick in.
I also will order Chick Fil A every now and then for lunch if I'm working from home. It definitely doubles the bill for 1 person's lunch. But I get to skip the drive and line, the food usually comes very quickly, and I don't have to stop what I'm doing to make the round trip. Not something I do daily or weekly.

The drivers have no clue what DoorDash takes, whether it's percentage, a flat amount per order, a contract with each restaurant. We have no idea what they actually get

My oddest delivery was a shopping at Dollar General for 1- 20oz coke. Delivering 3 miles and being paid $7 for it. So they paid like $10 for a regular bottle of coke.
She could have purchased a 20oz. coke at Dollar General for $1.00?

Try $2 and change. But I get what you're saying

I participate but will never understand how industry has conned the consumer into paying for goods/services while also subsidizing the labor cost. It's like a bank charging you a fee to borrow your money.
Most restaurants don't have huge profit margins or normal 25-30% margins. I know some working on 10-15% but they do make large gross sales, so at the end of every 3 month dividend payment or yearly total dividend, it pays off. Plus, some of them draw a decent salary against operations expenses.
They do that because of the above and the consumers have accepted that. So, they pay waiters (which they need many of them) low wages and they get 18-20% tips, so it keeps their operating costs down and more profit.

we've used it twice and it managed to be an extra 20-30% from me just picking it up myself. after i saw the extra charges from one time we got it from a local italian place, i said never again.
if somebody's bringing me a whataburger (i would never) that's fine. upcharge it an extra 5-6 bucks bringing my family's entire meal is ridiculous.
i'm guessing that it's a bigger thing in larger cities than it is in my rural/suburban town, because i just don't get the appeal

Bama n Beer
By the way, you are a cool Bama fan!!
I thought you guys would have known the buisness model of DD and what the restaurants are giving up from their overall profit. However, someone not coming to dine in without a delivery service will not raise their gross profit.
Here in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, I'm good friends with a few Thai restaurant owners as I frequent Thailand (65 trips in 20 years), speak their language and cook their awesome food. She told me that Deliveroo was taking 30% back in the day. I think it went down to 25% and recently someone told me 18% for the lesser expensive services. To me that is too much!!
I have a friend who lives here from Sudan and he started an import/export business where he gets a preferred cargo rate on Emirates Airlines in Dubai and moves cargo. He then started a small food delivery service using his 2 cars and 5 motorcycles. I brought him to the owner of an Ethiopian restaurant in Abu Dhabi and when he was making his deal he offered a flat 10 AED fee (which is only $2.72 and 20 ($5.44) AED if outside the city limits. I was kicking him under the table saying he should just do the 20 flat rate and not charge the resto anything, or just 10% of the bill and the 10 AED fee. That would be much better for the resto owner and by word of mouth he could have got a lot of work. Of course I wanted 5 AED for every order plus I would have set up a marketing deal with him for a consultant fee on top.

I haven't the slightest clue other than a guess.
My guess is their revenue is service charge, delivery fee, as well as a % of the restaurant sales.
I've heard people say that restaurant owners hate them, but if the restaurants weren't seeing an increase in their bottom line they wouldn't be using them.
As with everything, someone gets the short end of the stick. There's no value to be had other than parceling out new business that would never exist. I'd imagine in this scenario the restaurant gets the biggest piece of the pie, DD the second, and then it's either the customer who gets a shitty driver/cold food or the driver who ends up not making their margins that takes the loss.
