Today being the anniversary and all, I got to thinking of all the craziness I saw after Katrina in New Orleans. So many wild stories come to mind, but what were the craziest/shadiest/scariest things some of you guys saw/heard of going on in the aftermath of Katrina?
My cousin is with Wildlife and Fisheries and was doing boat rescues in NOLA. He saw multiple people get smoked as they started to argue over who would get what while looting.

They saw rapes and murder. People defecating right where they stood. "Security" over run and beaten to a pulp. Suicides. Family turning on family over water and then worse. Gangs of young men dragging women into restrooms and other places.
Being a member of the media doesn't make me some oh I know shite. I rarely believe anything I don't see.
Talking to these people and reading their notes (written on well, some of the things were filthy. I didn't want to touch it) and looking in their eyes, whew. Looked like they had been to Auschwitz. I couldn't not believe them.

I saw it all, unfortunately.

Not in the Dome. The conditions were awful, ran out of food and water and no toilets. But it is an urban myth that people were being raped and killed. How do I know? My cousin is married to the guy who was in charge of the National Guard. Saw him at Thanksgiving that year and asked how bad was it. He said it was terrible and the suffering was awful, but not anything like wholesale carnage. He is now a retired General. So, I'm taking his word over any other person.

People walking on Canal Street in fur coats in 90 degree weather...

What became of them after Katrina, did they stay here?

One of my dad's good friends cooked 300 lbs of crawfish on his own dime to bring to refugees staying at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas. He got there and walked in, told some of the refugees he had some free food for them but needed help unloading. The response was "F you. Now it's your turn to be our n-bomb."

There was a guy live streaming katrina downtown nola while he was trying to keep his datacenter up and running. He was like 8-10 stories up but I was GLUED to the video stream for 5 days straight. DIdn't get much work done. Now that was reality tv.

I remember when stories like this started coming out every politician and every media member said it was wrong and made up to make the black people of New Orleans look bad.
I wish the truth of what happened in that dome and in the convention center was told clear and widely across the country. People need to be upset by what happened and maybe, just maybe, New Orleans could have gotten its act together in terms of leadership.

Only 3 people died in the super dome

Being in BR, it was crazy seeing the amount of people getting dropped off on Siegen at I-10. It was a chaotic scene.....
If we never witness another Katrina, that would suit me, just fine.

Best part of that was when they cut to Chris Tucker after and he was like “Holy shite did Kanye just say that?”

It’s a shame that people in a disaster needed security. It would never cross my mind to attack someone or steal from someone in that environment.

A. Assuming his initials are TB, He was not "in charge" - although he was my boss.
B. He was/is a politician first and a soldier second. A big part of his job was to do damage control in the media.
C. Having said all of that, generally, that's true about it not being "wholesale" carnage, but we gave the Superdome over to the population for basically all of Wednesday and Thursday - no telling what kind of inhuman shite went down for that 48 hour period.
Now, nobody missed a meal - we had plenty of food and water. When I saw folks bitching about only having prepackaged/MRE meals and water to drink, I got pissed. Most folks were very grateful - when we had the civilians pretty much cleared (I want to say Friday afternoon, but maybe Saturday morning), a guy called us over, shook our hands and thanked us. I'm not saying that made all our effort worth it, but it went a long way.

Where are these official numbers coming from? The only accusations of horrific acts in the dome I know of are rumors and hearsay.
Where is anything official?

I think Baton Rouge had well over 250,000 evacuees in the aftermath of the storm

That’s was and still is the worst traffic I had ever been in, and LSU just started. I forget how insane life was that year because weeks later Rita came and fricked the south western portion of the state

I never new anyone who stayed in the sole or convention center or anyone who met anyone who stayed in the dome or convention center
They suffer from extreme PTSD from what they saw there and said I wouldn't believe half of it if they told me.

Old friend of mine was there with the National Guard. She saw it with her own eyes. Your source is wrong.

Yes, I believe it was around that. The whole thing was so damned overwhelming, it was just a case of "get those rescued out of the danger zone NOW".
That was a sad scene, all those people with not much more (if anything) than the clothes they were wearing. But they were alive.
