Sure enough, he called back, apologized and began calling me every week asking what he could do to help. I appreciated him for doing that but a man in his position should have been more aware of what was going on.
Good on him for apologizing.
I'll never fault someone for not understanding the magnitude of a disaster several states away.

I will always remember an old black man being interviewed by the news and he says (talking about the levee breaking) “that water was rushing down the street like somebody was chasing it”. I will never forget that!

I'm from OS as well. Drove from LSU back home 2 days after.
I-10 looked like hell so I knew it was going to be bad. Drove right up to the beached casino barges. Wild stuff.
OS's topography really saved that town.

This is so true it’s scary.
I was living on the Alabama coast at the time. Our house took 4 feet but we only went 20-30 miles north to friends house. Lost power for a day but other than having to gut our house, I got off easy compared to most. I feel for each and every person that was in NOLa/ had property there. Took us nearly 6 months to get our house back to normal.

The sad story of Hardy Jackson.
LINK
This is the man who was interviewed on television who lost his wife and he promised her he would care for the children. His daughter later died of cancer and he died of a terminal illness as well.

The lower 9th has seen greater rebuild efforts than parts of the Mississippi coast.

I expect in 10 years you'll still bitch and piss your pants every time you see the word "Katrina".

I worked FEMA restoration project in St Bernard parish during the middle of a parish president election. It was shady as hell.

I had multiple conversations with different people about how the lower 9th ward was apparently the only place affected by Katrina if you watched the MSM.
The Mississippi coast wasn’t affected. Slidell, not affected. NOLA Lakeview was just fine after the levee breach was plugged. But the lower 9th ward was devastated and it wasn’t a shithole before the storm like we all thought. It was a tragic loss.
