My brother (who was in NOPD) and I at the time got back in the city about 6-7 days after. We drove uptown to get some items from my apartment on Broadway; complete ghost town near the university area. I was guarding the car with a pistol (I hate guns, but, I knew I needed this thing at this moment), and a humvee with military from Iowa, I believe, shows up. I Was scared shitless but they wanted to see if we were ok and told us to get the hell out of there when we were done...

Thats the one. Did anything ever come out as to why, or was it a result of some sort of PTSD?
As another poster mentioned, his name was Paul Accardo, not David. He shot himself 5 or 6 days after the storm hit. He had separated from his wife a couple of months before the storm. His house was under water. The police force was in turmoil. Another cop had already committed suicide. A bunch of cops deserted, some even stealing cars from Sewell Cadillac. The ones who stayed were scratching for supplies. Probably six of the eight district stations were under water. I think the 4th in Algiers and the 8th District station in the Quarter were the only ones that didn't flood. There was large scale civil unrest and a couple of cops had been shot by criminals (which led the the cops becoming even more heavy handed than usual). I don't think the Danzinger Bridge shooting had happened yet, but it was around the same time.
Anyhow, things were very fricked up in general, and also in his personal and professional life. He couldn't get himself through the pit of despair. Sad deal.

So your brother was one of those guys that abandoned his post and took off then stayed away for a week? Nice.

How many cops deserted? I seem to remember about 60 being fired or suspended, but it was a long time ago. I think NOPD was about 1,500 at the time.

Even though I was out of town, Paul Accardo’s death was the first I could put a face to...was a real shame.
This is the prevailing suburb image from the storm that sticks out:
Got emails months after w/ this photo and the subject line “Why looting didn’t happen after Rita”
That’s the corner of Jefferson Hwy & Citrus Rd. in River Ridge, blocks from where I grew up.

I was there the whole time. I was mostly in Lower Plaquemines parish, restoring levees. Then, went in the city to manage some of the dewatering operations.
Did a shite ton of work with the Federal boys, of all disciplines.
All of the rapes, and shootings, and military guys riding helicopters, shooting looters.....is made up bullshite by a "guy that knew a guy that heard....."
None of that shite happened. I was there, in the LDHS TOC, daily.
The Danzinger Bridge incident happened, though.

And, that place wasn't like war.......I've seen war, and New Orleans wasnt anything but a shitty city that experienced a horrible natural disaster, populated by idiots too stupid to survive on their own for less than a week, without the government wiping their arse and powdering their nose.

Not long after the storm, hustler club ran on generators and sold beer out of ice chests. So many workers and soo much money.
Driving into town was creepy AF, dark, no street lights. Always got stopped by national guard to see where we were going.

While doing sector patrols with the National Guard we can across a SAAB Car in the hood, looked untouched no smash windows. Opened the doors can across insurance papers called the insurance company. Turns out a doctor claimed it was water damaged. Very much the opposite, so we let them know where they can find it.

I live in Ocean Springs, MS. I evacuated to Panama City for Katrina but my dumbass thought I needed to get back as soon as possible so I drove back the next day. My house was fine except we were without power for 10 days. Things that really stuck out to me were having to wait in line at gas stations for hours (when word was spread that a gas station actually had gas again) and the station being overseen by National Guard with automatic rifles. That was sobering. And being limited to $20 worth of gas, which wasn't much when gas prices were over $3 at the time. And by the time I got to the pump it had been dropped down to $10 max. We also had to park our cars in the drive way inches a part to keep people from coming at night and syphoning the gas from our tanks.
And I actually enjoyed the MRE's that were being handed out. And they were handing out cases of canned water...from Anheuser Busch.
I also did low-level coast line flights all across MS and LA looking for dead marine mammals (part of my job) and seeing how the MS coast looked like boxes of matches had just been dropped everywhere...literally nothing was standing near the beach. Only dead animals I actually saw were quite a few floating cows in the MS River delta.
I also had to do some dolphin work from small boats in Gulfport not long after the storm and there were floating bags of rotten chicken everywhere.

I remember restaurant re-openings being the best news of the week. Don't think Ive ever rejoiced like when the Wendy's not far from me re-opened, just any sense of normalcy. Anybody else remember all the fast food joints offering CRAZY wages after Katrina just trying to restaff?

I'm not sure if they also came, but there was 100% an Israeli contractor brought in for Audubon Place. I know someone who was part of their hiring. They didn't have enough people readily available, so he also called Blackwater to do other stuff in the CBD.
Good story about one of my gf's best friends:
He was a counselor at a summer camp that tried to hire a diverse group of people. The camp ended, and he and two other counselors (one from London, and the other from Japan IIRC) were just hanging out looking for stuff to do before they had to go back home. He decided to take them to his house on the MS coast before the hurricane so they could see some of what a hurricane was. They planned on leaving before SHTF. This house is actually on Beach Rd.
They hung out that night, got drunk, slept in the next day, and woke up to waves coming up through the floor of his house. He was glad the other guys were there, as he needed help putting stuff on sofas and whatnot. They got that done, and the water kept coming up and up, until it was waste-deep in the house. All of the front windows had blown out by then.
At that point, they decided they needed to get out of the one-story house they were in. The foreigners were shitting their pants, and gf's buddy had to figure out what to do. Once they stepped out of the raised house, shite was blowing everywhere, and the water was chest-deep. So, he decided they should move to one of the big oak trees behind the house.
All three of those guys spent the rest of Katrina getting in and out of that tree, because they were too tired from holding on.
Water was out that night, they slept in the wet house, that had moved 30ft back, and then walked out the next morning
