You know areas that get cold have crawfish too. The rest of your advice is solid lol.

i understand they can survive in colder weather but temps below 60 degrees reduces growth and freezing temps that cause the water to freeze reduces oxygen levels which causes much higher mortality rates. Also colder winters hampers the growth of vegetation that they eat

there have been studies on this. Sure it can be done but the feed needed to make it happen combined with the higher mortality rates and reduced growth makes it an economic non starter

not to mention this guy has been in the banking industry working from home and has zero idea how much hard work goes into farming crawfish, much less the business side of boiling and selling.

he also has looked into actual demand. not everybody eats crawfish outside of LA, TX, MS

also in some areas they are considered an invasive species so he doesnt even know if its possible

there are so many things that go into this when talking about outside the states i mentioned that he hasnt even looked at yet. But yall keep encouraging a fellow board member who is obviously going through a mid life crisis to lose his life savings

OP if you want to do something crazy...pick a Caribbean island, move down there and open a bar or something. Dont be a dumbass and think you are going to suddenly starting farming and selling crawfish in South Carolina.

People are doing interesting things in South Carolina.
Some are growing heritage rice and beans.
One pig farmer was specializing in producing bacon cut the way Brits like their bacon and selling it under the British names (like streaky bacon).

One was even growing delphiniums for the cut flower market.

Ask around and find where there are niches to be served.

Too cold in CLT and almost all of NC, but low country or Pee Dee basin area should not have any issues. Worst case, I think I just need deeper ponds to let them keep warm..? Someone's comment about raccoons is a concern, we have chickens...and coons. LA has plenty of those things, right? Tons of rice grown in SC.

There are farms here and they seem to always be sold out when I have looked...only a couple I can find in SC and 1 north of Columbia.

There are native crawfish here, but do not know if it's our species. Im pretty sure I can seed here (or can't I catch them in LA and drive back?)....worst case I do buy babies the first year and find a way.

Part of what I left out is my wife's dream is to have a farm and would fight if you called her a city girl. I will just laugh at you, but wouldn't say you are wrong. And it's likely a dumbass idea, but so is rotting by myself and relying on some corp to make that easy money.

We've always had gardens and grow some stuff well ..and I have been working on learning Spanish regardless of this nonsense.

I would appreciate more crawfish farms because that means a growing supply and eventually lower prices for consumers.

35 years ago a friend had his mid-life crisis and moved to Carolina to help a friend of his establish a crawfish farm. They lasted a couple of years before throwing in the towel. It's probably much like opening a new restaurant. The odds are against you, but there always is a chance. If you have plenty saved and can afford to fail; why not?

Agreed,...Id keep the corp job until it made sense - I can work wherever, almost whenever I want for now. Besides this would be on the side business until I need to quit.

Also thing its different climate now, more people from LA here - willing to try and spend way too much on food.

Probably put in wife's hand who teaches and much smarter than me- woman farms also gets special handouts/lending.

Fyi, Crawfish farmers hire labors to catch, sort, and bag the crawfish. You can’t do it all yourself.

Friend of mine does but he has a small 20 acre operation. Makes him about 70-80k a year cash money. Uses a flat boat with a gator tail to run his traps. Sells by word of mouth. Makes more with his crawfish than the cattle they run and claims it’s less headache than the cattle.

Less than 5000ac and doesn’t even register on nass database is far from tons

Less rice grown in SC than Florida, Tenn, and Illinois

you're right, should have said historically (rice plantations), the climate and soil can maintain it but surely isn't the best place in the world.

The first thing you might want to do is check with SC Department of Agriculture on if that's legal to do. Red swamp crawfish are considered invasive to the Carolinas. There may be some regulations to ordering a hundred thousand invasive species and dumping them out onto your land. I would imagine not checking that and being wrong could shut you down in a hurry and cripple you with fines.

I live in Charlotte, near Carrowinds, and I would purchase crawfish from you as long as the price isn't as high as giraffe pussy.

Have you seen prices for live in your area?

When I lived in CLT (Mooresville now) we hosted a few boils and had a source for live (5-6) and remember complaining then...pre-covid prices so I don't want to guess now. Asian guy that claimed to have gone to LA himself to buy from the market.

so you know that area gets cold right?

The azaleas, camellias and dogwoods bloom earlier in SC than where I live in ETX which isn't that far from SLa. It's not that cold.

umm because its prolly not a good idea for a banker in his 40s with a self described cushy lifestyle to give it all up to chase some dream that he hasnt even done a market analysis on. that is why

Don't need another crawfish farm. SwLa would be better off if all the weekend warrior crawfish farmers would've instead started huge gardens and sold produce, or started pig or cow farms that sold directly to consumers

I just know Mingo doesn't want this smoke.
