Do you consider that a bad thing?

AGREE with majority of previous posters. There are too many people out there to risk one dumb and avoidable accident. Also, if you are immunocompromised or have open sores be careful...the water there is a de facto urinal.

True story, when I was in college 21-22 years old I got pulled over by Green Jeans because my boat wouldn't start at crab island. Well actually it kept dying. It was a typical college kid beater 16 ft skiff with an old 40 evinrude on it. Probably bad gas. Anyway, I had 5-6 beers in about 2.5 hours.

They took me to the coast guard station and set me on dry land where the entire crab island could see me run through the gauntlet. Damn guy made me count to 30 and back down standing on one leg. I told him afterwards that after 15-20 and I didn't fall over that was ridiculous to make me keep going. Guy said he figured I was about 0.08. Pissed me off because I probably was over the legal limit but I was not doing anything dumb at all, all the while you have idiots being idiots all over and they just sit and watch. But I aced it and they let me go, of course the damn boat started right up and ran great rest of the day.

Long story short, make sure your boat runs and dont drive wasted. Its all no wake zone so you shouldn't hit anything. If you have a pontoon boat of people chances are 1 will be sober and if not make someone be.

i would agree with most of the posts here saying don't drink and boat if the legal limit was .15 or so. But going out and having a few beers and getting a DUI for a .08 is BS.

how insightful. You could probably say the same for any place on the Florida Gulf Coast, no?

The gulf coast? Hell you could say that about 90% of the USA today.

I don't necessarily disagree with the limit being 0.08. But unless they see you doing something stupid I don't understand why they'd give someone a BUI test. Sure, have it there for wrecks and idiots trying to kill someone.

I'd bet we have a good 5 deaths a year in the Destin area that are boating drunk related. Whether it be someone hitting a jetty, hitting a dock, diving into crab island's 1ft of water and getting paralyzed, etc.

They call a tow service and as they're getting towed back to the dock/launch, Sheriffs are on wave runners pulling EVERY boat over for breathalyzers. It cost them about $100 for the tow, but was well worth the escort back to shore. Many folks got arrested that day.

It was almost like getting a "boat Uber" in a sense.

I agree, if you're going to be out there drinking, have a contingency plan. Don't rely on luck. It will fail you eventually.

And then they put it on the trailer and drove home...

I agree, but then add in the other factors, rental boat, not familiar with specific coastal water way, Crab island partying and crowds.

Hmm...that’s fair. I never considered it a big risk. Probably because I usually think of a boat being on the open water and it not being a concern. Truth be told, since high school I don’t think I’ve ever been on a boat without everyone on the boat being at least slightly buzzed.

Don't go over idle speed or act like a mouth breather and you'll be fine.

We just had a drunk boater kill two people and severely injure one more on July 4. Not to mention the emotional trauma that the witnesses/other passengers will have to deal with for the rest of their lives.

Culprit (29) is currently in jail and charged with two counts of reckless murder with more charges to follow. He is also a very experienced boater FWIW.

But by all means get as hammered as possible!

There has been increasing pressure on Destin officials to crack down on a lot of the behavior that has been occurring on the island. I have yet to see the police increase their enforcement/presence around the island but I suspect its on the way.

On our way back from Pensacola this weekend their was a significant police presence under the Ft Walton bridge but I didn't see them stop a single boat.

Edit just to point out you can still have a DD and kill someone. Saturday I witnessed a women at the airshow start the boat and slam the throttle forward all while people were hanging out in the water near the prop. Apparently she thought that was the proper way to turn up the radio volume. If that boat wasn't tied up to a group of larger ones and/or someone wasn't closer to that prop, it would have been bad.
