Taking a trip to Destin next month and getting a pontoon boat to take to crab island for the day. What is the police presence out there on the water? Are they out actively trying to bust people for boating under the influence?

Have a designated driver. Too many people out there and not worth the risk.

I know while out on the water I enjoy the boat renters who are chugging booze all day...

Don't speed through no wake zones or act like a dumbfrick. If you stick to these two things you'll most likely be OK.

Edit: and wear your GD kill switch!! They look in binoculars to see if that little red/orange line is hooked to the drivers pants. If they see it unattached they have more reason to approach you and search the boat (and your breath)

If you get noticed at crab island by boat police then you need to be arrested.

It’s just like any other social gathering.

If you are such a jackazz that you point yourself out, i don’t feel sorry for you at all.

“Will cops try to bust me when I’m putting my life, my family’s lives, and random strangers’ lives in danger by being a drunken idiot?”

A buddy of mine told me this story: He and some buds took one of their boats out to Crab Island on a busy holiday weekend. They got out there early and partied all day. Nothing crazy, but all had been drinking. They decided to pack it up in the late afternoon, but the boat wouldn't start. Battery issues, I guess. They call a tow service and as they're getting towed back to the dock/launch, Sheriffs are on wave runners pulling EVERY boat over for breathalyzers. It cost them about $100 for the tow, but was well worth the escort back to shore. Many folks got arrested that day.

It was almost like getting a "boat Uber" in a sense.

I agree, if you're going to be out there drinking, have a contingency plan. Don't rely on luck. It will fail you eventually.

Anyone else feel crab island is too commercialized now? I feel like it was more relaxed and low key 12-15 years ago.

I can't believe anyone is dumb enough to ask this and contemplate risking operating a boat drunk around tons of boats and swimmers

not at all. Just don't go above 2000 rpms in pontoon boat or act like an idiot and you will be fine.

If you are renting a boat get a captain as well. We did this last year and it was great.

A captain would be ideal but paying a guy $40 / hr to sit on the boat all day and do 15 mins of work driving us back in is retarded. I’d probably gladly pay $100 for someone to be water taxied out to us as a DD, or the sea tow idea isnt terrible.
