This is in an office. A baw I work with popped his ACL playing flag football and is taking almost 6 weeks off. He has some PTO and paternity leave left so he's taking it all.

I'm all for taking all your alloted time off as it's a form of compensation, but taking 6 weeks in a row is a bit ridiculous. He's kind of hanging everyone else out to dry and taking paternity leave not for paternity reasons.

What say you baws about this move? Career set back or limiting in my opinion.

I mean OSHA requires time off and to be cleared by a doctor to return to work or you will get sued.

does not compute...does your company give you paternity time just to take off to "be a parent"?

I was active duty when I tore my ACL for the last time; after surgery I took 2 weeks off.....I was a dumbass tho....I should have taken the whole 30 days like the doc recommended.

I had two discs replaced in my neck and my doctor wanted me out of the office for six weeks as well, and I was at home six hours after my surgery with no PT, braces, or anything.

I can work from home though, and even then he said no work activity for two weeks.

You and your coworkers can thank all the lawsuit happy lawyers for doctors being extra cautious.

My company gives 4 weeks of paternity, to be used within a year of the birth.

Depends on the person. He may be unable to drive to work due to the injury and depending on the surgery timing, rehab, it may be better to just stay home.

ACL injury is serious business and can impact your quality of life forever.

So can we, but he pretty much said he's not working while he's off. Thats the worst part. Being out of the office for 6 weeks is inconvenient, being unavailable for 6 weeks is way different

At my firm he’d probably be laughed at for doing it

Especially when you’re sitting at a desk all day

I don't see the problem with him taking it as PTO. Its not like ACL surgery is a minor procedure. Baw won't even be able to walk for around 2 weeks, then easing back into normal activities and driving. If he's got PTO to use, I don't see the problem with taking his time healing up before he comes back to work.

Would you rather him use his PTO now to recover from surgery or just start calling out sick a whole lot at the end of the year to use all their leftover PTO when other co-workers might be doing the same thing?

Going through something like this right now.

Guy I work with was bragging to me about 4 weeks ago about getting another job offer. Not even a week later he gets a doctor to sign off on an injury which he’s told my manager 2 different stories on how he hurt himself. 8 weeks off and I just found out he’s extending to long term disability. He never mentioned getting hurt to me one time. He was sure bragging about that new job offer.

I’m all for people getting blessed, but I have/had to cover for him 11 weeks before they are able to post his position.
