That’s a little dramatic. Most people on vents don’t make it but there have been successful extubations. Mostly younger patients.

It’s relatively rare to survive a ventilator with covid, unfortunately.

It’s not a death sentence but it’s not a very good indicator.

We are just delaying intubation as long as possible here because we know we will have a very hard time extubaitng.

I know two myself — one was admitted to our LTC facility and is now home. He came with a tube feeding and that was pulled — he’s also a two time kidney transplant pt (first rejected).

The other is the dad of a friend — he had dm and ended up with either a bka or aka. But he’s home and doing well.

Anyway, was just curious.

My girlfriend is an icu nurse. She said they have only had 2 covid patients who needed to be intubated that survived.

Exactly.... very few come off with existing health problems. 1st line of treatment is high flow O2, vapotherm, bipap...... last step you are on the vent. MAYBE 10% are extubated successfully

I had Covid and it definitely attacked my lungs. Oxygen level never dropped below 97% but heart rate doubled during infection. Would wake up go to bathroom, fix coffee, and check vitals. Normal low 60s heart rate was then 120+.

I was 6-2 and just under 200 in my 40s. No health issues. I can see how someone with lung, blood pressure issues, or any other Heath issues struggles. Body just can’t get enough oxygen from lungs so heart pumps x2 to circulate the normal amount.

So here’s a question: c would home oxygen help if there were no other conditions as in your case? Even with 97% would it have helped?

I’ve seen patients survive an intubation with covid. Usually had to be on the vent for so long they had a trach and peg by the time they were weaned from the vent. Not a quick process at all.

Yep that was our patient situation. Glad that he’s home now.

We have had about 5 at my rehab hospital (IRF) who survived Covid and being on a vent. One was early 60's and the rest were 40's and 50's. They all came to us unable to walk. 2 were even unable to lift themselves to sitting. When they left us, they were able to take a few steps, but still needed help. One ended up with Guillain Barre afterwards.

It continues to fascinate me how it impacts multiple people differently

We had a 98 year old lady at our nursing home who had Covid; she had maybe mild fever, nothing else. Then once she caught c-diff she passed away shortly after
